On the night of August 29, 2022, a male stabbed two defenseless dogs, named Diesel and Jax, from outside the fenced yard of their home off of 6th Street near the McDonalds in Wellington.
Sadly, Jax lost his precious life during the attack while Diesel was seriously injured.
Jax was the emotional support dog for Yadhira Morales.
The Lamier County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the incident and launched an investigation.
Ms. Morales offered a reward for information and the sheriff’s office reached out to the public in hopes of identifying the suspect.
Tips from the community led investigators to identify the suspect as 47-year-old DAVID THOMPSON (pictured).
More than two years later, the sheriff’s office has now announced that “After an extensive investigation, which included analyzing forensic and digital evidence and traveling to Arkansas to interview the suspect, LCSO obtained a warrant for Thompson.”
In November, THOMPSON was arrested in Arkansas and extradited to Larimer County on two felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty. He was issued a $15,000 cash/surety bond by the Larimer County Court which he was able to post on November 21, 2024.
According to the sheriff’s office, THOMPSON had no prior connection to Ms. Morales, her yard or her dogs.
Captain Bobby Moll, who leads the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, said: “This was a disturbing case that robbed a family of their beloved pet. Our team put considerable effort into identifying the person responsible and building a strong, evidence-based case. While it can’t reverse the loss, I hope this arrest brings some measure of comfort.”
THOMPSON is due back in court on January 17, 2024.
