The Canton Police Department arrested 21-year-old CYNTHIA ANN SCHMIDGALL and 20-year-old ETHAN WAYNE SCHMIDGALL (both pictured).

On June 7, 2024, police along with the Stark County Humane Society responded to a home on Henry Avenue SW south of Route 30 after a report from the Humane Society.

The inside of the home was covered in feces and urine. Officials found several cats and dogs who were severely malnourished.

Sadly, three cats and four dogs were found dead.

Police said that some of them had been dead for so long that they began to liquefy and seep into the ground.

A total of sixteen animals were rescued and are now recovering at the Stark County Humane Society. According to police, two of the rescued dogs were so emaciated that their rib cages were visible and they were struggling standing up.

Officials learned from multiple neighbors that the SCHMIDGALLS had not been at the home for three to four weeks.

The couple are now facing twenty-three charges of prohibitions concerning companion animals. Only seven of those counts are felonies, the others are misdemeanors.

The SCHMIDGALLS waived their preliminary hearings in Canton Municipal Court and their cases bound over to Stark County Common Pleas Court.

The Ansonia Police Department arrested 26-year-old ASSANTE COVERSON and 30-year-old JAVON COVERSON (both pictured).

According to the Department’s press release, on June 6, 2024, officers and detectives executed a search warrant at a property on 22 Condon Drive in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation. During the search, officers discovered several dogs who were emaciated and needed urgent medical attention. Police said the status the dogs were found in indicated “severe neglect.”

According to court documents obtained by Voice For Us, with the assistance of Ansonia Animal Control and Woodbridge Animal Control, eleven (11) dogs and three (3) cats were removed from the property. The poor souls were found to be living in “deplorable, inhumane, and dangerous conditions.”

Sadly, one dog was found deceased. The deceased dog was discovered “in the rear of the property in a garbage bag on a wheelbarrow,” stated the document. Police said the furvictim’s body will be sent to the University of Connecticut so that a necropsy can be performed to determine the cause of death.

The live dogs were taken to the Ansonia Seymour Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

The document identified the Voiceless Victims as:

Bonnie

Connie

Donnie

Ferrna

Gucci

Kora

Lotta

Lucy

Milo

Mona

Naya

As stated in the document, veterinarians advised Ansonia Animal Control Officers that “the condition of the injured dogs was serious, and that they had low body health scores, and displayed signs of abuse, mistreatment, and severe injury but not limited to: malnourishment; low body weight; feces and urine burns; ear infections; conjunctivitis; ocular ulcers, and flea infestation.”

According to medical reports, the dogs “appear to have been neglected or cruelly treated”, so the City of Ansonia’s Animal Control Department took custody of them “to safeguard their welfare.”

Police said that despite efforts to save the dogs, sadly two of them were euthanized “due to their extreme medical conditions.”

Police charged ASSANTE COVERSON with:

Cruelty to Animals

Failure to Comply with Dog Ownership Requirements

Failure to Comply with Rabies Control Ordinances

A ridiculous $1,000 bond was set which he was able to post so he is free.

He is scheduled to appear at Derby Superior Court on June 14, 2024.

JAVON COVERSON is facing:

Eight counts of Cruelty to Animals

Seven counts of Failure to Comply with Dog Ownership Requirements

Seven counts of Failure to Comply with Rabies Control Ordinances

Bond set for him was $10,000 which he posted and he is also free.

The court date set for him is for June 20, 2024, at Derby Superior Court.

So far, the investigation has led to the arrest of these two individuals but police said that more arrests are to be expected.

The court document stated that the Ansonia Police Department determined that all twelve (12) dogs are “owned” by:

LORRIE MCINTOSH-COVERSON (owner of the property)

ASSANTE COVERSON (resident)

JAVON COVERSON (resident)

LAKEYA COVERSON (resident)

HEZEKIAH JOHNSON-COVERSON (resident)

The document further stated that the Ansonia Police Department also determined that all twelve (12) dogs were “severely neglected, injured and/or abused” by:

LORRIE MCINTOSH-COVERSON

ASSANTE COVERSON

JAVON COVERSON

LAKEYA COVERSON

The Quincy Police Department arrested 62-year-old ANGELA BRIDGES GEARY (pictured),  owner of Little Friends Pet Lodge.

Court documents obtained by Voice For Us accuse GEARY of keeping cats and dogs at her business on 43 N Cleveland Street in deplorable condition.

When Quincy Police Sgt. Barber first responded to the facility back in March, he reported that he was “overwhelmed with the scent of urine and fecal matter” to the point that he started vomiting.

Quincy Police had been contacted by GEARY’s former employees after discovering a freezer with dead cats and dogs inside.

According to Sgt. Barber’s report, when he entered the facility, he saw fecal matter on the floor along with cat litter, dog wee pads, and urine-stained newspapers. He saw kennels that were covered in feces and had no food or water for the cats and dogs who were housed inside.

Forty-one (41) dogs and ten (10) cats were found on the property in inhumane conditions.

Based on his findings, Sgt. Barber contacted the Code Enforcement Department and the business was issued a stop work order for all business at the location. Sgt. Barber also called in Animal Control and the ASPCA who responded with cleaning supplies and food for the cats and dogs.

The freezer containing the deceased animals was transported to the ASPCA in Gainesville and all of the furvictims, approximately eight-seven (87), were released to Elizabeth Pearlman, DVM a Forensic Veterinarian for Humane Law Enforcement. For most of the animals a necropsy could not be performed as they were in an advanced state of decomposition and crushed from being stacked in the freezer.

In April, Dr. Pearlman contacted investigators to give an update on the first thirty-two (32) animals who were set aside for a necropsy. She advised that twenty-three (23) of them were felines and nine (9) were puppies, one without a head. Dr. Pearlman advised that all of the animals showed signs of “severe flea infestation” and said that to complete all the necropsies would require approximately three more months.

During the investigation, GEARY agreed to sign over fifty-one (51) animals to JUDY LYNN DUBOIS, owner of Du Bois Rescue.

As many of you know, Leon County authorities arrested DUBOIS in May 2024, and six dogs were removed from her property.

GEARY was arrested on June 2, 2024, on fifty-one counts of animal cruelty and fifty-one counts of confining animals without sufficient food.

She was released from the Gadsden County Jail the following day after posting a $5,000 bond.

According to court records, GEARY’s arraignment is scheduled for June 25, 2024, at 11:15 a.m.
