On March 14, 2025, the Madison County Sheriff's Office arrested 41-year-old STEPHEN ANTHONY GOSSMEYER (pictured) and charged him with animal cruelty and tampering with records.

According to the probable cause affidavit, deputies had received multiple reports regarding animal neglect at GOSSMEYER’s home suspecting also the presence of deceased animals.

Additionally, reports alerted deputies to a possible probation violation.

GOSSMEYER is on probation for a 2022 indictment on two felony charges of theft by deception.

On March 14, the probation officer accompanied deputies to GOSSMEYER’s home to conduct a search of the property that had been requested by the Chief Probation Officer.

According to the affidavit, GOSSMEYER’s probation officer asked him whether he had any deceased dogs and to that GOSSMEYER answered: “I told you already, no.”

However, upon searching the residence, deputies discovered one dead dog buried in rubble.

GOSSMEYER then stated that he did not have any more deceased dogs but according to the affidavit, deputies found eight other dead dogs.

Deputies also found seven live dogs who were extremely malnourished and starving and found evidence that the furvictims had chewed on their cages out of hunger. The search additionally led to the discovery of frogs, lizards, parrots, snakes, and spiders.

The residence was covered with piles of trash and filled with empty cages indicating clear signs of neglect.

A forensic veterinarian responded to the scene to attempt to determine the cause of death of the deceased dogs. Some of the furvictims likely starved to death, while others had been dead for so long that their bodies were decomposing.

The Animal Humane Society picked up the animals while the live dogs who were microchipped were reunited with their families.

It is alleged that GOSSMEYER came into possession of the dogs after claiming to be a trainer.

Authorities allege that GOSSMEYER lied to his probation officer about training dogs for the U.S. Border Patrol. In February of this year, GOSSMEYER asked his probation officer for permission to travel to Texas to train dogs for the agency.

According to the affidavit, on March 5, GOSSMEYER provided a document which confirmed his employment for a private K-9 detection and apprehension training seminar for U.S. Border Patrol, but the document was later proven to be falsified.

At the time of writing, online records show that GOSSMEYER remains held in the Madison County Jail on a $25,000 bond and is set to appear in court on April 28, 2025.

On April 3, 2025, a female dog who was extremely emaciated and severely abused was found in the 4500 block of Northwest 36th Street in Lauderdale Lakes. The concerned citizen who found the dog called for help and an officer with Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division picked her up and took her to Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

The rescue is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the monster(s) responsible for the dog’s neglect.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue shared pictures of the furvictim, a black Giant Schnauzer whom they refer to as Bibi.

BiBi was severely emaciated to the extent that she could not even stand or walk without help. The sweet soul was suffering from multiple injuries, including broken ribs, damage to her spine and hips.

In the heartbreaking video published on their Facebook page, Big Dog Ranch Rescue said: “This was no accident. This was animal cruelty”.

In an update posted on April 10, 2025, the rescue said: “BiBi has just had her first haircut, and what we uncovered beneath her fur is even more heartbreaking. Her emaciated body is now fully visible, with her bones jutting out, a painful reminder of the neglect her 1 year old self has been through. If we hadn’t gotten to BiBi when we did… she likely wouldn’t have made it through the night. That’s how close she was to the edge. It’s a thought that’s hard to shake. This miracle girl has been through the unthinkable—and now we need to make sure she never feels that kind of pain again. 🤍”

The rescue is working with the Broward Sheriff’s Office to find the monster(s) responsible.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to come forward and speak up. Please, contact Big Dog Ranch Rescue at (561) - 791 - 6465 or Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) - 493 - 8477. Thank you!

The Toledo Police Department arrested 33-year-old MICHELLE ANN ROBERTS (pictured).

Officers responded to a house in the 400 block of 3rd Street in east Toledo from which ROBERTS had been evicted. She left without taking her dogs and when officers arrived at the home, they found two live Pitbulls and a deceased Pitbull puppy in a bedroom upstairs.

Officers found the live Pitbulls in cages with garbage piled on top of them, hiding them from sight. The furvictims had no food or water and it appeared they had been abandoned for several days due to the condition they were in.

Officers reported that the three dogs’ rib bones were visible and it appeared that the puppy had starved to death.

ROBERTS was taken into custody on April 11, 2025, and was charged with one count of cruelty to animals. Online arrest records show she was released from the Lucas County Jail on a $1,500 bond.

I took the liberty of naming the deceased puppy Cloud, for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.
