The Ansonia Police Department arrested 26-year-old ASSANTE COVERSON and 30-year-old JAVON COVERSON (both pictured).

According to the Department’s press release, on June 6, 2024, officers and detectives executed a search warrant at a property on 22 Condon Drive in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation. During the search, officers discovered several dogs who were emaciated and needed urgent medical attention. Police said the status the dogs were found in indicated “severe neglect.”

According to court documents obtained by Voice For Us, with the assistance of Ansonia Animal Control and Woodbridge Animal Control, eleven (11) dogs and three (3) cats were removed from the property. The poor souls were found to be living in “deplorable, inhumane, and dangerous conditions.”

Sadly, one dog was found deceased. The deceased dog was discovered “in the rear of the property in a garbage bag on a wheelbarrow,” stated the document. Police said the furvictim’s body will be sent to the University of Connecticut so that a necropsy can be performed to determine the cause of death.

The live dogs were taken to the Ansonia Seymour Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

The document identified the Voiceless Victims as:

Bonnie

Connie

Donnie

Ferrna

As stated in the document, veterinarians advised Ansonia Animal Control Officers that “the condition of the injured dogs was serious, and that they had low body health scores, and displayed signs of abuse, mistreatment, and severe injury but not limited to: malnourishment; low body weight; feces and urine burns; ear infections; conjunctivitis; ocular ulcers, and flea infestation.”

According to medical reports, the dogs “appear to have been neglected or cruelly treated”, so the City of Ansonia’s Animal Control Department took custody of them “to safeguard their welfare.”

Police said that despite efforts to save the dogs, sadly two of them were euthanized “due to their extreme medical conditions.”

Police charged ASSANTE COVERSON with:

Cruelty to Animals

Failure to Comply with Dog Ownership Requirements

Failure to Comply with Rabies Control Ordinances

A ridiculous $1,000 bond was set which he was able to post so he is free.

He is scheduled to appear at Derby Superior Court on June 14, 2024.

JAVON COVERSON is facing:

Eight counts of Cruelty to Animals

Seven counts of Failure to Comply with Dog Ownership Requirements

Seven counts of Failure to Comply with Rabies Control Ordinances

The court date set for him is for June 20, 2024, at Derby Superior Court.

So far, the investigation has led to the arrest of these two individuals but police said that more arrests are to be expected.

The court document stated that the Ansonia Police Department determined that all twelve (12) dogs are “owned” by:

LORRIE MCINTOSH-COVERSON (owner of the property)

ASSANTE COVERSON (resident)

JAVON COVERSON (resident)

LAKEYA COVERSON (resident)

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office arrested an Anderson mailman for pepper-spraying a dog through the mail slot of the home where he was delivering mail.

According to the resident of the home, Ms. Kerrigan Cronk, her Ring doorbell camera captured the mailman first dropping some mail and then getting a pepper spray bottle out of his bag. The then proceeded to spray her dog, a 1-year-old Dalmatian named Palmer.

Online arrest records maintained by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office show that the mailman, identified as 52-year-old DAVID WALTER VANLANDINGHAM (pictured) was arrested on June 5, 2024, and released the following day.

Ms. Cronk reported the incident to the authorities and according to WTSP, she filed a claim with the USPS. Ms. Cronk’s husband went to the post office on Raible Avenue to talk to the postmaster, and she told WTSP: “The postmaster kept telling my husband the pepper spray is a very mild pepper spray. That's all that he kept saying, which to me doesn't matter. He deliberately sprayed my dog three times and our house with my 2-month-old.”

Ms. Cronk went on to say: “I don't understand it because he stuck our mail in the slot and then went out of his way to spray our dog. He could have just stuck the mail in the slot and then walked away, but he chose to stay and continued to spray our dog.”

In a written statement sent to 13News, USPS said: “The Postal Service extends sincere apology to the customer whose dog was sprayed by the carrier in this incident. The action displayed by the employee in the online video does not reflect the efforts of the thousands of professional, dedicated carriers in our workforce.

We are unable to comment further on a specific individual personnel matter.”

VANLANDINGHAM is facing one count of animal cruelty and one count of criminal mischief.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office launched a second investigation into its K-9 Division after retired K9 Officer Kona was surrendered to the Liberty County Animal Shelter back in April.

In a press release the sheriff’s office said that K9 Officer Kona was dropped at the shelter on April 29, 2024, by deputy TREVON TOLSON.

K9 Officer Kona retired and was released to TOLSON on December 20, 2023. As explained in the press release, “When a canine is retired, the handler may be offered the opportunity to adopt it, provided they assume all medical responsibilities as outlined in a signed agreement.  The adoptee is liable for all care, maintenance, vet visits, and medical treatment of the canine.”

According to the release, the sheriff’s office was not aware that TOLSON had surrendered K9 Officer Kona and became aware through social media posts and after being advised by Sergeant Jessy Kilgore. The release also stated that: “No notification was received from Liberty County Animal Control about the status of the retired canine.”

Dr. Rachel A. Peeples, Co-Founder and Primary Veterinarian at Coastal Community Veterinary Clinic in Hinesville, told WSAV that K9 Officer Kona appeared to be underweight and added that whether or not neglect was a factor, the proper steps to care for her may not have been taken.

Dr. Peeples stated: “There are reasons why she would be underweight that would not have been preventable, and there are reasons that would have been preventable. Either way, noticing her being underweight should have happened, and she should have sought out veterinary care to figure out the problem.”

According to the press release, “Sheriff Bowman would not agree to, and had no prior knowledge of, the retired canine being treated in this manner. The well-being and proper care of all canines, both active and retired, is of the utmost importance to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and any allegations of mistreatment or neglect are taken very seriously.”

After an investigation into the matter was initiated, TOLSON was reassigned to a patrol position, and his K9 Officer was reassigned to a different handler, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The sheriff’s office said that the day after K9 Officer Kona was surrendered, she was adopted by a “previous canine handler.”

I have emailed the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and requested updates on K9 Officer Kona and the investigation. If I get a response, I will post an update.

The timeframe of the investigation is unknown and as stated at the beginning of this article, this is the second investigation into the K9 Division of the sheriff's department.

In fact, as stated in the release, the Liberty County Sheriff's Office had launched an internal investigation already in March 2024, “following a complaint of falsified training documents.”

On March 21, 2024, “Sheriff Bowman was informed that Lieutenant Corey Nadeau and Sergeant David Abbgy, the supervisors of the K-9 Division, had forged training documents to recertify the working canines within the Sheriff's Office. Lt. Nadeau and Sgt. Abbgy resigned prior to the investigation being completed.”

The press release goes on to say that: “After the internal investigation was concluded, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was notified and asked to conduct a criminal investigation regarding the alleged falsified records being reported to Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). The results of the GBI investigation have been forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council for determination of possible criminal charges. This step was taken to ensure the utmost transparency and to reassure the public and all stakeholders of our ongoing commitment to providing professional law enforcement services to the community. “
