On November 29, 2024, Vermont State Police received several calls about a dog who had jumped out of the bed of a moving pickup truck on Interstate 89, Hartford.

In a press release, police identified the furvictim as a 5-year-old German Shepherd named Ace and the driver of the pickup truck as 33-year-old ADAM HOWARD, of Leicester, N.C..

Police said that Ace “was tethered in a way that was detrimental to his welfare.” Ace was improperly leashed in the bed of the pickup truck and slipped out his collar.

The furvictim jumped out of the truck onto the highway and traffic came to a near standstill as motorists attempted to rescue him. Ace was struck by a vehicle in the southbound lane.

While all this was happening, HOWARD kept driving.

A Good Samaritan took Ace to Small Animal Veterinary Emergency and Specialty (SAVES) in Lebanon, N.H. where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.

With the description of HOWARD’s truck, police reached out to the community for information in the hope of finding him, and eventually Troopers were able to make contact.

HOWARD claimed that he was unaware that Ace had jumped out.

HOWARD was charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. He was cited to appear in Windsor County Superior Court in Woodstock on December 31, 2024, to face the charges.

On the afternoon of November 18, 2024, deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office responded to Palmetto Avenue in Big Pine Key in reference to a dog who had been drowned.

A neighbor, whom I will refer to as SH, told deputies that 72-year-old DELAINE ABEE LOWRY (pictured), went to his home holding a wet deceased puppy. She told him she had just drowned the dog and asked him whether she could bury him/her in his yard. To that, SH answered no and LOWRY said: “I’ll just throw it over the fence.” SH then asked LOWRY to leave.

A deputy went to LOWRY’s home and asked her where the dog was. According to the affidavit, LOWRY handed the deputy “a white plastic grocery bag containing a deceased Mini Schnauzer puppy (Approximately 2-3 pounds, 6-10 months old).”

LOWRY then told the deputy she had to kill the dog because the dog was going to kill her.

While a deputy went inside LOWRY's home, another deputy remained outside and stood by the furvictim. LOWRY then attempted to retrieve the deceased puppy stating she was going to bring him/her “back to life.

The puppy was turned over to Florida Keys SPCA Animal Control Officer Evans who then took the puppy to Cruz Animal Hospital for a necropsy.

Other dogs who were found at the home were removed and placed in the care of the SPCA.

LOWRY was placed under arrest and transported to Lower Keys Detention Center on felony aggravated animal cruelty charges. She was released after posting a $35,000 bond.

Two days after her release, LOWRY ended up back behind bars for trying to break into the SPCA shelter in Marathon.

On the afternoon of November 20, 2024, deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office responded to the Florida Keys SPCA on Aviation Boulevard regarding a burglary in which a door was “pried open”.

Security video identified LOWRY as the responsible party. The sheriff's office said that video showed LOWRY “traversing a fence and taking other means to enter the property illegally.”

SPCA staff said LOWRY was known to them and that she was trying to retrieve dogs who were confiscated from her following the Monday arrest when she drowned the Mini Schnauzer puppy.

When deputies went to LOWRY's home, she was wearing the same clothes as seen in the security video.

She was taken back to jail and she is now also facing charges of burglary and criminal mischief.

At the time of writing, online arrest records show that LOWRY is still in custody and according to court records, she is scheduled to be arraigned on December 5, 2024, at 9:00 a.m.

I took the liberty of naming the furvictim Cotton for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.

State Attorney Dennis Ward for the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit announced that 69-year-old EDMUND CHRISTOPHER JAMES (pictured), has been found guilty of animal cruelty, a first-degree misdemeanor.

The four-day trial, presided over by Judge James W. Morgan III, culminated in a unanimous guilty verdict after less than four hours of jury deliberation.

The conviction stems from an incident that happened on July 5, 2024, when JAMES left his 5-month-old chocolate Labrador retriever named Jasmine locked in a hot car for several hours on his property on Aviation Boulevard with no food or water.

When eventually JAMES found Jasmine suffering from heat-related distress, he tried to cool her down with a hose and then took her to Keys Animal Hospital in Marathon.

Jasmine arrived in critical condition and presented symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke, including neurological distress, elevated body temperature, and swelling of the brain.

Although veterinary staff managed to stabilize Jasmine by administrating IV fluids and oxygen, they advised JAMES that Jasmine needed advanced treatment and urgently recommended she be transferred immediately to a facility in Ramrod Key.

Instead, JAMES took Jasmine back home where her condition worsened leading to multiple seizures. The following day Jasmine passed away after she suffered needlessly because of JAMES’ reckless disregard for her precious life.

On July 9, 2024, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested JAMES and charged him with animal cruelty.
