JEFFREY LEE JOHNSON arrested after twenty-two Pitbulls were found suffering from extreme neglect

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 65-years-old JEFFREY LEE JOHNSON (pictured below) after twenty-two Pitbulls were removed from his home on 189 East Southwinds Drive in Newport.


The poor furbabies were found “suffering from extreme neglect” including one furbaby “in need of immediate medical attention.”


The sheriff’s office said in a news releasecitizens reported concerns for the hoarding and mistreatment of animals” at JOHNSON’s residence and Deputy Jessica Newman launched an investigation.


Carteret County Sheriff Deputies along with Carteret County Animal Control Officers went to the reported location and discovered “numerous puppies chained to stakes in the ground with irritated skin, cuts, and open sores on their bodies”, said the sheriff’s office.


JOHNSON was arrested on Thursday, October 21, and charged with one felony count and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.

He was released after posting a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, October 25, 2021.


The sheriff’s office said that JOHNSON was also charged with violating the Carteret County solid waste ordinance.
