On the early evening of Thursday, March 30, 2023, the Chico Police Department received a call from staff at Valley Oak Veterinary Center to report a possible case of animal cruelty. Staff explained to police that three individuals had brought in a dog who appeared to be deceased.
In a press release by Chico Police and obtained by Voice For Us, police said a veterinary examination confirmed that the dog was dead and that the cause of death was from a fatal blow to his/her carotid artery.
Officers spoke with the individuals who took the dead dog to the clinic and one of them, 19-years-old ELIJAH KADEEMALI DOSWELL (pictured), of Chico, told police he was watching the dog for his roommate at an apartment in the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue in Chico.
As stated in the press release, at one point DOSWELL “attempted to place the dog in a kennel, located inside the apartment. The dog then retreated to a bedroom and hid under a bed.”
According to police, DOSWELL “used a broom handle to try to remove the dog from under the bed. While doing this, the end of the broom handle lodged in the throat of the dog.”
Police said DOSWELL’s actions led to the fatal injuries to the innocent dog.
Police placed DOSWELL under arrest and booked him into Butte County Jail for animal cruelty and bond was set at $15,000.
Online records show DOSWELL was released after posting bond!
Police said: “The Chico Police Department takes allegations of animal cruelty very seriously. We understand that the animals in our community are often more than just pets and deserve to be protected.”
