On Sunday, April 2, 2023, deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home off Thoreaus Way near Montgomery Drive in Northeast Bexar County after receiving a report about a dog chained to a tree with no food, water, or shade in the backyard of the residence.

Upon arrival, deputies found the dog, tied with a heavy tow chain about two feet long.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar described the voiceless victim as “basically skin and bones.” The dog looked like a German Shepherd mix but due to his/her malnourished condition, it was hard to tell his/her breed.

Sheriff Salazar said: “It was pretty clear that the dog was not doing well and was probably not going to survive much longer.”

Deputies then contacted the dog’s guardian identified as 36-years-old CESAR DEJESUS DEHOYOS (pictured), and waited for him to return home from SeaWorld.

According to Sheriff Salazar, DEHOYOS claimed the dog ran away for a while, returned malnourished, and he was trying to nurse him/her back to health.

It just seemed like a flat-out lie,” said Sheriff Salazar.

DEHOYOS was placed under arrest and charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals/torture, a third-degree felony.

The dog was taken to the veterinarian, and his/her condition is unknown. To this regard, I have emailed the sheriff’s office and if I receive a response I will update the article accordingly.

In the backyard deputies also found three other dogs. Two of them appeared to be German Shepherds and looked “very healthy,” said Sheriff Salazar. He suspects the dogs were being used for breeding. The other voiceless victim was a puppy and was malnourished.

DEHOYOS then surrendered the dogs.

Online records show DEHOYOS’ bond was set at $40,000 and he is no longer in custody.

He is due back in court on May 3, 2023.

Kris 6 News reports that on Monday, March 13, 2023, its photojournalist was at West Guth Park to cover a story “about the duck pond.”

While on site, he saw “a group of people grabbing the geese by the neck.”

Thankfully, he promptly recorded the despicable act and then called the police and responding officers watched the distressing video.

The video, published by Kris 6 News, shows a woman first feeding the geese, then all of a sudden, she bends over and grabs one goose by the neck, then with the other hand she grabs another and holds them while the helpless birds try to escape.

The video goes on to show that at some point a child can be seen also grabbing a goose by his/her tiny neck and that happens in the presence of adults and other juveniles.

According to an update on the story published by Kris 6 News, “Corpus Christi Police said they identified the people in the video and had an extensive talk with the family. They are now turning the case over to Corpus Christi Animal Care Services. CCACS will review the information and decide if it meets the criteria for animal cruelty.”

I have emailed Corpus Christi Police Department and requested additional information. Lieutenant Peña confirmed in an email that “Corpus Christi Animal Care Services is handling the incident.”

After a video was released by the Dowdy Ferry Animal Commission showing a male abandoning a dog, Dallas Police Department arrested 41-years-old RAMIRO ZUNIGA and charged him with cruelty to non-livestock animals - abandon, a Class A misdemeanor.

Police said that ZUNIGA intentionally abandoned the dog, a young German shepherd, in the 9000 block of Teagarden Road on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

The Dowdy Ferry Animal Commission released the video on Friday, March 10, 2023, and it showed ZUNIGA in an older model white Chevrolet SUV pull over, open the tailgate, and the furvictim is pushed out of the vehicle by ZUNIGA. In the background people can be heard yelling at ZUNIGA, who clearly ignores the witnesses, and drives off while the furbaby chases the vehicle.

Neighbors who witnessed ZUNIGA’s despicable act, were able to capture the dog. Dallas Animal Services then responded to the scene and took custody of the voiceless victim who reportedly had a minor leg injury but is otherwise OK.

In a Facebook post, Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center said: “We've had many inquiries about a German Shepherd-type dog featured in a news report about an animal abandonment caught on camera. We can guarantee the animal is safe, but we cannot otherwise comment on an ongoing police investigation - we appreciate your help in preserving the integrity of the case!”

After the release of the video, PETA offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the male's arrest.

Investigators were able to trace ZUNIGA’s vehicle to his residence, and on March 11, 2023, following the execution of a search warrant, ZUNIGA was placed under arrest. ZUNIGA is being held at the Dallas County Jail.
