~ Update: May 2, 2024

I have heard back from Little Traverse Bay Humane Society.  Its Executive Director, Elise Ramsey, advised that “There were no deceased animals on the property. Zero animals were euthanized, and they are all thriving in our care with basic husbandry, clean bedding, and fresh food and water.”

Ms. Ramsey further advised that: “They are LOVING acting like cats should act....chasing fake mice and feather wands, sampling all of the delectable treats we have to offer and basking in the sun with fresh air flowing through the windows. Finally living the life they deserve. Several were suffering from intestinal parasites, in need of medical grooming, and in need of dental cleanings. They are all getting the care they need and deserve, and some have already found their forever homes.”

Ms. Ramsey kindly shared a picture of Bixby, one of the dogs who was rescued. Bixby was recently adopted.

Emmet County Prosecutor Michael Schuitema announced that 30-year-old RAVEN RENEE STAINES and her mother, 60-year-old DEBORAH RAYE PALCOWSKI, have been charged with animal cruelty after more than fifty (50) animals were rescued from a suspected hoarding case.

According to the press release by Emmet County Prosecutor Michael Schuitema obtained by Voice For Us, the investigation in this case began when an Emmet County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the duo’s home for an unrelated issue and saw “numerous animals and concerning living conditions at the residence.”

On April 16, 2024, the Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant and with the assistance of the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, forty-nine (49) cats and two (2) dogs were removed.

On the same day, the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society advised through a Facebook post that they had rescued fifty-one (51) animals from the duo’s home and that many of the furvictims needed “medical treatment, grooming, bathing, and foster care.” Several cats also had very young kittens.

In a subsequent Facebook post, the nonprofit wrote that the rescued furvictims were settling in to the shelter “and decompressing with comfy bedding, clean water and plenty of food. They all received medical exams yesterday, and are on their way to a bright and healthy future.”

The nonprofit expressed their gratitude toward those who donated and helped them face this new hardship.

Emmet County Prosecutor Michael Schuitema said that PALCOWSKI was charged with animal cruelty – twenty-five or more animals and lying to a law enforcement officer. The animal cruelty charge carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison.

STAINES is facing one felony count of animal cruelty: four to ten animals, which carries a sentence of up to only two years in prison.

PALCOWSKI and STAINES will be arraigned and their cases will be set for preliminary examinations in the 90th District Court for the County of Emmet.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson announced the arrest of 53-years-old ANTHONY MAURICE JACKSON SR. (pictured) after two innocent dogs had to be euthanized as a result of severe neglect.

During a press conference, Sheriff Swanson explained that back in June 2021, a female Bullmastiff named Mama Blue and her brother named Papa Black, had been bought for $2,500 each.

The furbabies developed a disorder on their paws called Pododermatitis (inflammation of the skin of the paw). Sheriff Swanson described it as “very similar to having an infected nail.”

The sheriff then showed the graphic pictures of the furbabies with all of their paws infected and said: “It’s like pins going inside the pads every time the dog walks.”

According to the sheriff, JACKSON was told that his dogs needed to be treated. The vet warned JACKSON that failing to promptly treat the dogs’ paws, would incapacitate them to the extent that they wouldn’t be able to walk, and ultimately leading to them being put down. According to Sheriff Swanson, JACKSON told the vet “he was gonna find his own remedy.”

In 2022, the house JACKSON lived in, off Fenton around 12 Street area, caught on fire and the insurance company put him in a hotel room but the 3-year-old Voiceless Victims were left in the backyard with their condition for over a year. A neighbor eventually alerted Animal Control.

On May 30, 2023, Genesee County Detective Jason White and Animal Control went to the property but the grass had grown so much that they could not even see Mama Blue and Papa Black. The siblings had been callously abandoned while in need of medical care and left to fend for themselves.

After Mama Blue and Papa Black were rescued, Detective White began his search for the monster responsible for the heinous crime. JACKSON was located and Sheriff Swanson said JACKSON has three prior domestic violence convictions. According to the sheriff, when JACKSON was found he refused to surrender the dogs and Detective White made multiple attempts to get JACKSON to surrender the furbabies so they could be treated. Unfortunately, in Michigan, if a guardian does not voluntarily surrender their dog, the dog cannot be seized.

Detective White then obtained two felony warrants for JACKSON and he finally surrendered Mama Blue and Papa Black.

Sheriff Swanson stressed the amazing job that Doctor McCormick did for these innocent souls and underlined the fact that Animal Control and volunteers “wrapped themselves around these two dogs.”

As Sheriff Swanson explained, Mama Blue and Papa Black were in so much pain, there was “no fix other than amputations” that the only ending that would make sense was “graceful euthanazation.”

I agree with Sheriff Swanson that this disaster could have been prevented!

Mama Blue and Papa Black were euthanized on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, and privately cremated with the monetary efforts of the people who made sure to give them something they did not know, LOVE! Team Mastiff, as Sheriff Swanson called all the incredible people involved in this case, made sure to show Mama Blue and Papa Black, love and care until their very last day on this earth! The day before Mama Blue and Papa Black were euthanized, Team Mastiff went out and got them a “big old steak dinner.” A member of Team Mastiff sent Sheriff Swanson a text message saying, “We wanted them to have full bellies.”

That’s should have been JACKSON’s responsibility! Instead, he allowed these innocent souls to live a life of torture!

JACKSON is facing two felony counts of cruelty to animals, killing, and torture. He is out on bond!

On Monday, June 19, 2023, in Dickinson County Circuit Court, 27-years-old KONRAD JACOB KLEIN (pictured) was gifted with a delayed sentence and placed on probation for murdering an innocent puppy named Lenny.

In September 2022, the Iron Mountain Police Department received an animal abuse complaint from Guardian Vets, an answering service.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Voice For Us, on September 19, 2022, KLEIN had called Guardian Vets and told an employee that his yellow Labrador puppy named Lenny had gone to the bathroom in the house five times that week. KLEIN went on to tell the employee that he “just took it too far” and told her that Lenny was bleeding from the mouth, gasping for breath, and couldn’t stand.

The employee told police that she advised KLEIN to take Lenny to the closest 24-hour animal hospital, BluePearl Pet Hospital, in Appleton, Wisconsin.

The employee further stated that the following day, when she called KLEIN to ask him if Lenny had been seen by a veterinarian, KLEIN said: “No, it’s all good. It worked itself out.”

The employee asked KLEIN whether Lenny was dead, and KLEIN repeated “it’s all good” before disconnecting the call.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office took over the case and assumed the investigation because the incident took place in Felch Township.

When KLEIN was questioned, he eventually admitted to investigators that he had hit and kicked Lenny in the side. KLEIN claimed he “did not know the extra strength in the moment.” KLEIN told investigators he was feeling stressed at the time because of what he was going through. KLEIN claimed Lenny died while KLEIN was driving him to get help. According to KLEIN, he buried Lenny at his brother’s house in Green Bay.

In November 2022, KLEIN was served a warrant and he then turned himself into the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office on one felony count of killing/torturing an animal.

Dickinson County Circuit Court was very generous with KLEIN and showed him all the compassion he did not show Lenny!

Judge Christopher Ninomiya, who sentenced this filthy murderer, placed KLEIN on probation pending a delayed sentence.

As reported by WLUC, according to court documents, “conditions of his delayed sentence include a 1 year probation, during which he must complete a mental health and domestic violence intervention. In addition, he must not own, possess, or care for an animal.”
