RAFAEL CANTU BAEZ-RIESS and FRED JOHN RIESS arrested - Fifteen dead dogs found in South Boggy Creek

Following a months-long investigation into the discovery of fifteen dead dogs in South Boggy Creek, 51-year-old RAFAEL CANTU BAEZ-RIESS and 61-year-old FRED JOHN RIESS (both pictured), were arrested and are facing charges.


It all started back on April 14, 2024, when in the early afternoon, the Austin Police Department responded to a report regarding dead dogs found in South Boggy Creek behind a recently sold home on 2107 Shiloh Drive in South Austin.


Animal Control Officers pulled the dogs out of the creek. The poor souls were wrapped in plastic bags or pet pee pads and surrounded by trash consistent with cleaning out a house before moving out.


In the backyard of the home on Shiloh Drive, police found fourteen abandoned ducks. Under the belief that the RIESS committed an act of cruelty to non-livestock animals or abandonment, on April 22, 2024, police issued twenty-eight warrants for the duo.


According to court documents, the RIESS moved out of their home on Shiloh Drive on April 13, 2024, after buying a new home in Cameron, Milam County.


Police said that approximately a month before the discovery of the deceased dogs, the RIESS’ realtor noticed several different types of animals on the property and when the realtor asked the duo whether they needed help relocating the animals, they refused.


On June 25, 2024, the RIESS were taken into custody by deputies with the Milam County Sheriff’s Office on Austin Police Department misdemeanor warrants.


During a police interview, BAEZ-RIESS said that he and RIESS would put in the freezer the dogs who passed away until they could arrange for their cremation. BAEZ-RIESS further said that the freezer was moved to their new house and that police would find deceased animals in there awaiting cremation.


A detective with the Milam County Sheriff’s Office obtained and executed a search warrant at the RIESS’ new home on 303 Boedeker Lane in Cameron.


Officials seized the freezer and took it to the Austin Animal Center, where investigators removed thirty-three small dead dogs and bird-like animals.


Some of the dogs were wrapped in material similar to what was found around the deceased dogs in South Boggy Creek. Investigators later determined that the dogs found in the freezer were similar in size, color and breed to those found in the creek.


Investigators are now charging the RIESS with multiple misdemeanor counts for animal cruelty and felony counts for dumping the dogs in the waterway.

BROOK LYNN SCALERO arrested – She kept a journal depicting torture, abuse, and killing of dogs

The Mesa Police Department announced the arrest of 42-year-old BROOK LYNN SCALERO (pictured).


Police said in a press release that SCALERO was arrested in connection with the deaths of three innocent dogs whom police identified as Griffin, Gus, and Pepe.


On November 4, 2024, a journal that belonged to SCALERO was turned over to the police by her former roommate and according to the press release, the journal “described in torturous detail the continued abuse and ultimate deaths of multiple dogs under Scalero’s care.”


In June 2024, P.A.W.S fur the Cause reported that on May 19, 2024, SCALERO agreed to pay $500 for a 3-year-old Maltese mix named Pepe. The organization allowed her to leave with Pepe with the understanding she would pay for him later that night, but she never did.


On October 5, 2024, officers with the Mesa PD responded to the VCA Animal Hospital in reference to a deceased 3-year-old Maltese Mix who had been found by a dumpster of an apartment complex. The person who found the dog, worked for P.A.W.S. fur the Cause and assumed the furvictim was Pepe. However, when the microchip was scanned, it turned out that the pup was Griffin, another dog registered to SCALERO. According to police, “Griffin had had injuries consistent with animal abuse.”


During an investigation, police learned that between November 2023, and October 2024, SCALERO lived with a roommate who had a dog named Gus and that Gus had died while under SCALERO’s watch.


According to the affidavit provided to Voice For Us, SCALERO told her roommate that she took Gus to the vet for a tooth infection and he died there.

SCALERO was then kicked out of the apartment and when she left, she left behind some personal items, including “a journal with her name, address and email on the inside”, stated the affidavit.

The affidavit further stated that the journal discussed in detail about how SCALERO tortured approximately twelve dogs, killed five dogs and physically abused a 14-month-old baby.


According to the affidavit, the journal entries stated some of the following:


Pepe: “He was a 3-year-old Maltese. I kept him one night and killed him the next day. He tries to pull away but I don’t let him, instead I choke him out by strangling him over and over again. I leave him in my hot car for over 14 hours. On that day after dehydrating him, strangling over and over, beating him over and over, I force him to overheat. Then I take him and lay him down behind a bush by my house then I strangle him until he stops

flopping around. That’s how I know he’s dead”


Griffin: “I will do to him what I have done to everyone else. I strangle him the whole way home, then I strangle him when we get home. In the end he died from the heat. I had tried to strangle fucker before work but he just refused to die so I had to leave him in the hot, hot car for 3 ½ hours. Griffin would sit in the car and bake to death. When I get out of work and go to the car, I find him on my side of the car on the floor dead. He crawled onto the floor of the car and died”


Gus: “So now I take 4-6 hair ties and wrap them around his nose and his mouth. There was so much blood that he swallowed a lot of it. Just like he did when I knocked his teeth out. One was his K9 tooth, and he bled a lot. I also would choke him out in my room and bathroom any time I want”.


On November 14, 2024, SCALERO was arrested for possession or use of narcotic drugs and during a police interview, she admitted to owning the journal but claimed the stories “were just creative writings,” stated the press release. SCALERO also admitted to taking Pepe without paying for him.


On November 15, 2024, a person called the police after finding a deceased dog behind a bush on 710 West 8th Avenue. The furvictim had a leash around his neck, and appeared to have been there for an extended amount of time. After scanning the microchip, the name of the dog was found to be Pepe and registered to P.A.W.S. fur the Cause. Due to the level of decay, a necropsy was unable to be completed on Pepe.


Three days later, SCALERO was interviewed again and she admitted to her involvement in the abuse, torture, and deaths of Griffin, Gus, and Pepe.


SCALERO was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on two felony counts of cruelty to animals, one felony count of domestic violence cruelty to animals, and one misdemeanor count of theft.

AMY ELIZABETH CARR and DONALD GENE STOVER JR arrested for animal cruelty and child endangerment

Following a months-long investigation into the cleanliness and safety of their home, the Winchester Police Department arrested 44-year-old AMY ELIZABETH CARR and 47-year-old DONALD GENE STOVER JR (pictured).


On April 1, 2024, police responded to the couple home in the 300 block of National Avenue on behalf of the Department of Social Services.


Upon arrival, in the front yard, officers discovered a partially buried dog carcass wrapped in a blanket. CARR and STOVER told police the dog had been deceased since November 2023 and the ground had been “too hard” for them to bury the dog.


According to the affidavit, Winchester Police Sgt. Chaz Niang entered the home but had to “immediately exit to gain fresh air” due to “animal feces, urine and a strong ammonia smell.”


The following day, the police returned to the home to conduct a more detailed inspection and Sgt. Niang reported the rooms to be dilapidated and filthy. Portions of the home, such as the kitchen ceiling, looked like they were ready to collapse.


Following the first search of the home, police removed four cats and two dogs. According to the court records, the poor souls were forced to live in their feces and urine in a laundry room without water or food. They showed signs of varying health maladies, including missing fur, red raw skin and bloody noses.


The couple lived in the home with the animals and three children aged 10, 12, and 14 years old.

The children and the couple slept in one bedroom and the only toilet in the home was backed up and filled to the brim with piles of feces and urine.


CARR and STOVER were arrested on November 12, 2024, and charged with six counts of animal cruelty and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

STOVER was released from the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

CARR was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to be arraigned on November 22, 2024, Winchester General District Court on the animal cruelty charges.


I reached out to Winchester Police Interim Chief Josh Berry to request additional information about the Voiceless Victims but he declined to disclose details about them and in an email, he said: “Given the sensitive nature of the case, since it's active and pending in court, and there are juvenile victims involved, we will not comment any further on the case at this time.”


I took the liberty of naming the deceased dog Lake for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.
