The Petal Police Department arrested an 11-year-old boy for killing a family’s dog.

On the afternoon of March 17, 2025, police received a call about a dog being attacked with a large stick.

The furvictim a 7-year-old male named Chico, was Timber Roberts’ dog. He was leashed behind the building of his family’s business on Old Richton Road, with his sister Romie, where he was taken to every day. Ms. Roberts’ stepdad found Chico lifeless later that afternoon.

Video footage from a neighbor showed a boy walking up and striking Chico multiple times.

Police charged the juvenile with aggravated animal cruelty and the case has been submitted to the Juvenile Youth Court. Because of his age, he won’t be prosecuted as an adult.

The boy was visiting his grandmother and she was charged with neglect as she failed to provide adequate supervision of a child.

Ms. Roberts is petitioning to strengthen Mississippi animal cruelty laws in support of Senate Bill 2261, also known as “Buddy’s Law.” Please, click here to sign the petition. Thank you.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to the public for assistance with two animal cruelty investigations after the discovery of three deceased dogs.

On February 26, 2025, two deceased dogs were found discarded in trash bags along Burns Road in Midway. The sheriff’s office identified the furvictims as an adult male chocolate Labrador and a young adult male Shepherd mix.

According to the sheriff’s office, both dogs “had apparent gunshot wounds to the abdomens and chest consistent with buckshot” and neither of them were microchipped or wearing a collar.

In a separate case, on March 12, 2025, a deceased dog was found tied to a guardrail in the 5300 block of FM 1372 in North Zulch. The furvictim was identified as an adult intact male brindle dog. The sheriff’s office said the furvictim was wearing an orange collar which was collected as evidence along with the tether. The dog was taken to Texas A&M where a necropsy was performed, courtesy of the Madisonville-based animal welfare organization Rufus Refuge.

Results showed severe trauma throughout the body. It is believed the furvictim was secured to the guardrail while still alive and subsequently was struck by a vehicle.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the identification of a male who abandoned a puppy on the porch of a home on Forest Lane SE., Marietta.

The incident happened on February 21, 2025, and it was captured by the homeowner’s surveillance camera.

The following day, the homeowner discovered the puppy, who resembles a Labradoodle, in a metal cage that had no food, water or bedding. The furvictim was severely emaciated and Detectives from the Cobb County Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit say at the time, temperatures were as low as 30 degrees.

The homeowner took the pup to Cobb County Animal Services and days later he was examined using the Purina body conditioning system. The findings revealed his ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones, and all bony prominences were visible from a distance, with no discernible body fat and a noticeable loss of muscle mass.
