The Stevens Point Police Department arrested 20-yeard-old KORBIN JAMES BENNETT (pictured), for animal abuse.

According to a police report obtained by Voice For Us, on the afternoon of Monday, October 31, 2022, Stevens Police Sgt. Poeschel was traveling on Water Street near Main Street when he saw a brown dog with dark colored muzzle, and no collar walking in the area.

Sgt. Poeschel’s attempt to lure the furbaby into his vehicle was unsuccessful so he notified dispatch.

Sgt. Poeschel learned that a male named Korbin had called stating he was looking for a similar dog. Sgt. Poeschel then followed the dog to the intersection of Bukolt Avenue and Second Street. On the scene, BENNETT arrived in a white Volvo sedan with Iowa plates. It turned out that he was the Korbin who had called police. Police said another male was driving the vehicle and was identified as Drew Ahlborn.

BENNETT told Sgt. Poeschel they took the dog to the Stevens Point Dog Park and as they were about to leave, the dog ran away.

Meanwhile, dispatch received a call from Tee-Roy's Repair on 916 Park Street. The caller reported that a male and a dog came onto the property and the male started beating a dog. The caller also stated that the male body slammed the dog causing him/her to draw blood. The dog described by the caller, matched the dog whom BENNETT was trying to catch.

Sgt. Poeschel then responded to the scene and spoke with two witnesses.

The witnesses first told Sgt. Poeschel what they saw and then showed him surveillance camera.

Sgt. Poeschel wrote in his report: “The footage shows the tan dog approach the fence, the same dog I observed earlier. Korbin is behind the dog, wearing the same clothing he was wearing when he came to catch the dog earlier. Korbin approaches the dog and steps on the leash. Korbin pulls the leash towards him, punching the dog twice in the head. Korbin then picks up the dog by the leash/ collar to approx. neck level and flips it over, slamming it on to the ground on [its] back. Korbin pins the dog down with his left hand and punches it approx. 6 times in the head/ neck area. Korbin appeared to swing from above his head, making full swings. Korbin holds the dog by the collar and at this time Justin appears in the video. Korbin again picks up the dog by [its] collar/ neck and lifts it above his head, flipping it over and slamming it down on the ground on [its] back.”

Sgt. Poeschel also reported that the male who was driving the Volvo, Ahlborn, at some point can also be seen in the video. The footage goes on to show that the dog slips his/her collar and run away while BENNETT walks away with the leash. Sgt. Poeschel noted that both BENETT and Ahlborn in the video were wearing the same clothes they were wearing earlier when he spoke with them.

Facts gathered on the scene, led Sgt. Poeschel to go to a residence on 165 Old Wausau Road where a resident stated that the dog’s guardian is Marie Depietro.

Sgt. Poeschel made contact with Depietro and she later went to the police station. She then watched the video footage from Tee-Roy's Repair and identified BENNETT, the male beating her dog, as her boyfriend. According to Sgt. Poeschel, Depietro appeared distraught after watching the video. She explained that BENNETT was watching her dog while she was at work. Depietro said the dog did not appear injured but may have bruising.

According to the report, Sgt. Poeschel was advised by dispatch that BENNETT “had several active warrants and several open CCAP cases.”

Sgt. Poeschel located BENNETT and Ahlborn in the driveway of 2701 Blaine Street, both wearing the same clothing as in the video and when he spoke to them earlier. BENNETT told Sgt. Poeschel he did not have an ID on him and “began stepping back.” Sgt. Poeschel grabbed BENNETT’s arm to prevent him from fleeing and he turned away. As he tried to step away, and was being evasive, Sgt. Poeschel placed him under arrest. BENNETT “admitted that the dog ran away from the dog park and he disciplined it when he caught it at 916 Park St. by striking it and picking it up by [its] neck. Korbin denied body slamming the dog”, stated the report.

The report goes on to state that as requested by the District Attorney’s Office, on November 16, 2022, Sgt. Poeschel contacted Depietro over the phone to follow up about her dog. Depietro “stated that she did not take the dog to the vet after the incident and did not notice any injuries or possible injuries to the dog.”

I have emailed the Stevens Point Police Department and requested additional information about the VOICELESS VICTIM.

I will also email the District Attorney’s Office because unless Depietro is a veterinarian, I do not understand why she did not take her dog to the vet and how was she able to not notice any injuries!

According to court records, on November 7, 2022, at his initial court appearance, BENNETT pleaded not guilty to one Misdemeanor count of Intentionally Mistreat Animals. His pre-trial conference is scheduled for December 5, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. before Judge Patricia Baker.

Midland police have arrested 45-years-old WYKETA DANET POSEY and 64-years-old WILLIE JAMES KELLY (both pictured), following an investigation into a seriously injured German Shepherd.

The investigation was launched on July 28, 2022, when Midland police were notified by City employees at Animal Control that POSEY was trying to surrender her dog, a German Shepherd named Cash.

Animal Control told police that Cash looked “starved” and had a wounded leg. KMID/KPEJ reports: “…court records stated that part of the dog’s leg was missing and there was about three inches of exposed bone covered in teeth marks.” Animal Control further told officers that it looked like the furbaby had been injured for quite some time.

Responding officers spoke with POSEY who told them that Cash had been hit by a car on April 26, 2022. POSEY told police that immediately after the incident, she took Cash to a veterinarian where she was told that although Cash didn’t have any broken bones, he suffered nerve damage and would probably drag his front leg if it were not amputated. POSEY told officers that she could not afford to pay for Cash’s surgery, so she did not schedule one.

In June 2022, not only did Cash not undergo surgery, but he also developed wounds from dragging his leg.

According to POSEY, she then scheduled a surgery for the beginning of July 2022, but that did not take place and she moved to Odessa.

POSEY told police that after she moved to Odessa, KELLY, her ex-boyfriend, took Cash from her yard, brought him back to Midland, and kept him behind a locked gate.

POSEY said that since Cash was no longer in her care, she did not feel she still had to reschedule his surgery.

On July 28, 2022, KELLY contacted Animal Control and asked for someone to go and pick up Cash. KMID/KPEJ reports that a short time later, POSEY “arrived at Animal Control with Cash in tow.”

POSEY and KELLY denied responsibility for Cash’s injuries and blamed each other for the lack of his care.

While being interviewed by investigators, POSEY repeated that she was not able to take Cash for surgery because KELLY had taken him. Investigators told her that evidence they gathered showed she did have access to the dog about 19 days before his scheduled appointment.

Investigators concluded that POSEY had more than enough time between the end of April and the beginning of July to get help for Cash before KELLY locked him behind a gate.

In view of these findings, detectives requested warrants to arrest both POSEY and KELLY.

Detectives also said that during the course of their investigation, they found a video posted by POSEY in August of 2020, that showed her being uncooperative with animal control officers, and saying that she didn’t care about the German Shepherd and only cared about her Pitbull.

KELLY was placed under arrest on October 5, 2022, and POSEY was arrested the following day. The duo have both been charged with animal cruelty.

KMID/KPEJ reports that the affidavit did not state whether or not Cash survived his injuries so I have emailed Midland Police and their PIO told me: “I will inquire if we have specific information on Cash’s health.” As usual, if I get a response, I will post an update.

~ Update: October 12, 2022

In regard to my email to Chicago police requesting the dog’s gender, breed, age, and name, Chicago police responded in an email: “Unfortunately, we do not know the dog's gender, age, breed, or name. Only that the dog was euthanized and the offender has been charged with animal cruelty. If further information becomes available and we are able to share it we will definitely be in touch with you.”

~ Update, October 11, 2022

I heard back from the Chicago Police Department.

It breaks my heart to tell you that the furbaby was euthanized.

“When the dog was brought into the emergency vet it was suffering from lung cancer and was euthanized. The dog was not euthanized due to injury from the incident but due to the lung cancer. The offender was charged with 2 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.”

~ Update: October 11, 2022

Yesterday, before publishing this article I have emailed the Chicago Police Department’s PIO and First Deputy Superintendent of Police Eric Carter to inquire about the VOICELESS VICTIM’s well-being.

Right now, I have also emailed Chicago Police Department Superintendent David O’Neil Brown and asked whether the dog was removed from CARTAGENA.

If I receive a response, I will post an update.

~ Original story:

Thanks to the intervention of multiple citizens, a dog is now safe and his/her abuser is behind bars.

On October 8, 2022, Ms. Paula Conrad, a Lincoln Park resident, wrote on her Facebook account: “A block away from where I live, a man beat his dog in broad daylight. Chicago, please keep your eyes peeled for this vancall 311 and ask for Area 3 detectives if you spot it. Let’s get this pup into a nice home and this scumbag behind bars!”

The incident took place on the afternoon of Thursday, September 22, 2022, in the 1900 block of North Maud Avenue.

Surveillance video from a nearby building shows a man exiting a van, opening the trunk, grabbing a dog by the neck and dragging him/her out of the vehicle.

Once the furbaby is out of the van, the male can be seen hurling and throwing the dog to the street. The dog then can be seen crossing the street and going on to the sidewalk on the other side. Meanwhile, the male is captured throwing a punch at the vehicle and getting things out of the trunk that he carelessly left on the sidewalk. After a few minutes, the male goes to the other sidewalk where the dog went but they both are off camera.

Footage then shows the male and the dog returning to the vehicle.

While the male goes back and forth, the furbaby follows him and his/her tail never stops waggling. All of a sudden, the male starts punching the dog, pulls the dog by the collar and temporarily stops when a woman exits a building with a dog.

In the video it appears that the male then looks up and talks to someone.

Ms. Conrad released the distressing video and over this past weekend, a motorist spotted the suspected van in traffic and posted a photo of its plate onto social media.

According to CWBChicago, on the morning of Sunday, October 9, 2022, a woman who was at a veterinary appointment at MedVet, 3305 North California, saw the male suspect from the video in the lobby and Chicago police responded to the scene.

Officers arrested 28-years-old JOSE ORLANDO CARTAGENA, of Hammond, Indiana, and charged him with one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

Reportedly, the dog was at the vet’s office with significant injuries.

As CWBChicago reported, CARTAGENA’s booking photograph is not yet available because the Chicago Police Department embargoes misdemeanor mugshots for four days before releasing them to the public.
