SINGIN KAI NELSON’s trial set to begin in October over brutal beating of dog who was later euthanized after suffering “catastrophic injuries”

The teen accused of savagely beating his defenseless dog, who ultimately had to be euthanized because of the grave injuries he sustained, is returning to court.

18-year-old SINGIN KAI NELSON (pictured) is scheduled to appear in Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for a final pretrial conference.

According to a press release issued by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and the City of Dearborn, on the morning of May 26, 2026, multiple calls to 911 reported that a dog was being savagely beaten inside a home in the 24000 block of Chicago Street.

Officers with the Dearborn Police Department responded to the location to investigate. When they arrived, NELSON refused to exit the residence. The dog, a 2-year-old Pit mix named Ice Cream Man, was removed from the home. According to Prosecutor Worthy, he “was found to be gravely injured.”

Officers took NELSON into custody, and Ice Cream Man was rushed to Affiliated Veterinary Emergency Services in Allen Park. There, veterinarians reported that Ice Cream Man had sustained a broken skull, a broken nasal cavity, and a broken jaw. Sadly, due to the severity of his injuries, Ice Cream Man had to be euthanized.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office alleges that NELSON “physically assaulted the dog multiple times.”

At the time of the incident, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in a written statement: “Our officers were confronted with an extremely disturbing case of animal abuse, and this level of cruelty will not be tolerated in our community. We are committed to thoroughly investigating these incidents and holding those responsible fully accountable under the law.”

Prosecutor Worthy charged NELSON with killing/torturing animals – second degree, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years.

Two days after the incident, on May 28, 2026, NELSON appeared in 19th District Court before Judge Sam Salamey for his arraignment. As court records show, NELSON stood mute, and a plea of not guilty was entered by the court on his behalf. He received a $250,000 cash/surety bond and has been in jail since his arrest.

Court records show that NELSON’s trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.

The animal shelter Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, which adopted out Ice Cream Man, issued a statement to clarify misinformation circulating about his adoption. The shelter explained that it is not true that the adoption fee must have been waived to encourage his adoption. Moreover, the shelter clarified that it was not NELSON who adopted Ice Cream Man.
