MONTE RYAN LAUKALA facing animal cruelty charges for attacking a nesting Canada goose

- Washington, USA -

The Milton Police Department arrested 49-year-old MONTE RYAN LAUKALA.

Reports of a disturbance involving a goose nest near a Key Bank along State Route 161 prompted the police to dispatch officers to the location.

According to court documents, officers learned that LAUKALA was seen using a metal sign to strike a Canada goose repeatedly while the defenseless bird remained on the nest guarding her eggs.

LAUKALA was taken into custody for misdemeanor animal cruelty and on April 14, 2026, he appeared in Pierce County District Court before Judge Sandra Allen for a probable cause hearing. LAUKALA pleaded not guilty and was released on $1,500 bail. LAUKALA is due back in court on May 19, 2026.

Each year in Spring, Canada geese, who are federally protected, return to the same nesting location and fiercely protect their nest. The incident galvanized the town of Milton, and the community has rallied around the mama goose to protect her, her eggs, and to make sure the nest is not disturbed.

Residents are now waiting for the eggs to hatch and for the babies to be big enough to fly away.

Meanwhile don’t worry mama goose, Milton got your back!
