MICHAEL ELSTON CRANDALL arrested on accusations of failing to seek medical care for his injured dog

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno announced the arrest of 28-year-old MICHAEL ELSTON CRANDALL (pictured).       

Sheriff Marceno said that on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, deputies responded to a domestic violence call at a home in Alva.

Deputies located CRANDALL hiding in a draining ditch along North River Road. CRANDALL was not alone, he had his dog with him, named Loki, who was “dragging his hind legs, shaking, and visibly in pain”, stated the press release by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies learned that several days earlier, Loki had been hit by a car and CRANDALL “refused to take him to a veterinarian for help.”

The Animal Cruelty Task Force stepped in and took Loki to a vet. It was determined that Loki had “severe spinal trauma”, but the good news is that Loki is expected to survive.

CRANDALL was arrested and booked into the Lee County Jail on counts of aggravated animal cruelty, battery, and resisting arrest. Bond was set at $10,000 and at the time of writing, online records show that CRANDALL is still in custody.

Court records show CRANDALL is due in Lee County Circuit Court on July 13, 2026, at 8:30 a.m..

In a written statement Sheriff Marceno said: “There is absolutely no excuse for allowing an animal to endure this level of pain without medical care. Thankfully, our deputies and Animal Cruelty Task Force stepped in and got Loki the help he desperately needed.”
