The Springfield Police Department arrested 32-year-old KSHAWN LAMAR RUSH (pictured).
Police said in a press release that on the evening of Saturday, September 6, 2025, officers responded to the 2200 block of Yale Boulevard “following reports of a disturbance involving an individual and a dog.”
Officers learned from witnesses that RUSH “was observed striking and choking a dog in the presence of bystanders. Witnesses further reported that the animal was believed to be stolen and that Rush had attempted to use the dog to threaten or intimidate others.”
According to the release, RUSH was on pre-trial release for multiple cases of aggravated battery and aggravated assault.
When officers found RUSH lying in a yard with the dog, a male Pitbull, they gave clear verbal commands in an effort to safely resolve the situation and protect the dog.
The Springfield Police Department released bodycam footage of the incident. RUSH can be seen and heard being hostile and confrontational with the officers, as well as insulting and aggressive with the ladies present on the scene. At some point RUSH grabbed the dog by his neck and dragged him. Officers kept telling him to let the dog go. When one of the ladies picked up the dog to put him in the police car, RUSH grabbed her by her shirt.
That’s when one of the officers advised RUSH he was under arrest. The situation escalated when RUSH went to sit down on the front steps of a home and officers struggled to handcuff him. Officers repeatedly ordered RUSH to put his hands behind his back, but he refused to comply.
Officers eventually managed to place RUSH under arrest. He is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including cruelty to animals, aggravated battery to a police officer, domestic battery, and resisting arrest.
To ensure full transparency regarding the incident, the Springfield Police Department released the officer’s body worn camera footage. At some point, one of the videos showed an officer asking the ladies on the scene whether the dog was theirs and they stated that someone on Facebook was actively looking for him.
I have reached out to the Springfield Police Department to inquire about the dog and his well-being. A spokesperson said in an email: “At this time, the Yale Street case remains an open investigation. No information, reports, statements, or additional videos can be released or discussed while the case is ongoing.”
