KAREN SUE TUPMAN arrested after three skeletonized dogs and three kittens suffering from neglect were found in her Wake County home

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office arrested 66-year-old KAREN SUE TUPMAN (pictured) of Raleigh.
A veterinarian contacted authorities after animals brought in by TUPMAN were found to be severely underweight.
The investigation led deputies to TUPMAN’s residence on Pendleton Lake Road in Raleigh.
According to deputies, they entered “a house so shockingly vile that describing it doesn't do it justice.”
Inside the residence, deputies reportedly found the remains of three dogs. Charging documents identified one of the dogs as a Yorkie named Mazie. According to the Magistrate’s Order, Mazie was found skeletonized inside a cage containing feces.
Deputies additionally found three live kittens inside the residence. The Magistrate’s Order identifies them as Biscuit, a tuxedo kitten; Gravy, a gray-and-white kitten; and Waffle, a striped kitten.
According to the charging document, TUPMAN is accused of intentionally depriving Biscuit, Gravy, and Waffle of necessary sustenance.
TUPMAN was arrested on September 11, 2026. She faces three felony counts of cruelty to animals and three misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.
The three felony charges concern the deceased dogs. The Magistrate’s Order states that TUPMAN “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did Maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat, disfigure, poison, or kill” the animals.
TUPMAN was booked into the Wake County Jail on a $50,000 bond. At the time of writing, online jail records indicate that she remains in custody.
