The Homestead Police Department arrested 48-year-old JEMICA MONIQUE WALKER (pictured).
On February 11, 2026, just before 1:00 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Everglades Motel on 605 South Krome Avenue “in reference to a disturbance in progress in room number 1”, stated the affidavit obtained by Voice For Us.
The reporting party, an employee of the motel whom I will refer to as Mr. T., advised that a female occupying room number 1 was beating her cat and possibly under the influence of drugs.
When officers arrived, they found the door of room number 1 open. WALKER was inside the room and “spontaneously” told officers that she was “only trying to discipline her cat”, stated the affidavit. WALKER went on to say that her cat “had gotten its leash entangled with the table’s leg and spilled the water causing a mess on the floor.” WALKER added that she beat the cat “for only about 30 minutes.”
Officers reported that the feline “appeared wet, scared, and was shivering on a small leash.”
Officers spoke with Mr. T., and he explained that he was sleeping in the room next to number 1 when he heard how WALKER loudly and repeatedly struck the cat “with apparent violence,” while yelling “don’t do it anymore”.
According to the affidavit, after 20 or 30 minutes of hearing the cat crying and WALKER beating the cat, he called the police.
A guest occupying room number 4, whom I will refer to as Ms. L., told officers that when she heard the commotion and the cat crying, she knocked on WALKER’s door. Ms. L. said that WALKER told her she was upset with her cat and that she was “disciplining it because it caused a water spill.” Ms. L. stated that she saw the cat tied to the table with a black leash.
In WALKER’s room, officers found a glass crack pipe with cocaine residue.
Officers arrested WALKER one week after the incident, on February 18, 2026. At the time of writing, records show that WALKER is still behind bars on one felony count of animal cruelty.
Miami-Dade County Animal Services removed the cat. The agency tells me that the furvictim is a female orange and white Tabby, estimated to be approximately four months old whom they named Jane. I was further told that Jane “is currently doing well under the care of our veterinary staff.”
Unfortunately, Jane’s photos cannot be shared at this time as the case is still being investigated.
