Investigation underway after two horses were shot in Boulder County

Investigators with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office are reaching out to the community for information after two horses were shot with a pellet gun.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said two Quarter Horses, a red pinto named Chief and a mare named Mystic, were injured at a property in the 12000 block of Flagg Drive in Lafayette.

According to the sheriff’s office, the “disturbing” animal cruelty case occurred over two nights.

Investigators say Mystic was shot once sometime overnight on August 10 or 11, 2026, while Chief was shot 36 times overnight on August 11 or 12, 2026.

Thankfully, the sheriff’s office says Mystic and Chief are both expected to be okay.

According to the sheriff’s office press release, no neighbors reported hearing anything, and no security cameras captured the incident or the suspect or suspects.

Investigators are now asking anyone with footage from cameras covering the area between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on the nights in question to come forward.

As stated in the press release, “Even small details can help.”
