The Shawano County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance as they investigate the shooting of a dog.
In its press release the sheriff’s office said that on July 15, 2026, a report was received about a dog who had been found “with apparent gunshot injuries near the area of Cedar Drive and Maple Road in the Town of Maple Grove.”
The sheriff’s office also said that the Shawano County Humane Society named the dog Sunny.
Sunny, a brown male mixed-breed weighing approximately 35 pounds and believed to be around 8 years old, was taken to Specialized Veterinary Care of Shawano for emergency treatment.
According to the sheriff’s office, veterinary staff confirmed that Sunny suffered eight gunshot wounds, a broken leg, and numerous other traumatic injuries. Based on the condition of the wounds, the injuries are believed to have occurred approximately two to four days before he was found. The sheriff’s office advised that Sunny remains under veterinary supervision and is awaiting medical clearance before undergoing additional procedures.
Specialized Veterinary Care of Shawano said in a Facebook post: “Despite everything he has been through, his spirit is truly amazing. He continues to show kindness, resilience, and a will to keep fighting, and we are honored to be part of his care.”
As the sheriff’s office explained in the press release, very little information is known about Sunny’s history or where he came from prior to being found.
Sunny was found to have a microchip registered to an out-of-state individual. Investigators are working with the Shawano County Humane Society to identify previous guardians or any shelters that may have cared for Sunny in the past.
At this time, the sheriff’s office has no suspects and unfortunately there are no witnesses either. As stated in the press release, cases such as this are “especially challenging when there are no witnesses and limited investigative leads.”
The department is asking for the public’s patience as investigators gather evidence and information.
In the meantime, we can help. Let’s share the story and the information available so far. Someone out there knows something. That someone needs to do the right thing and contact the Shawano County Sheriff's Office non-emergency dispatch center at 715-526-3111 or email Deputy Josh Heider. Thank you!
