DELMETRIUS JAROD BISHOP arrested for trying to abandon two malnourished dogs in Jefferson County

- Alabama, USA -

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old DELMETRIUS JAROD BISHOP (pictured).

The sheriff’s office said that on July 12, 2026, an off-duty deputy who routinely patrols the Mount Olive area, received an anonymous tip about BISHOP who had been seen on video attempting to abandon two dogs near Woodward Road.

Following the tip, deputies were dispatched to the 6000 block of Lakeside Drive to check on the dogs’ welfare.

When the deputies arrived, they were granted permission to see the dogs whom according to the sheriff’s office “were malnourished and that they were being kept in deplorable conditions.”

At that point the deputies made contact with Jefferson County Animal Control and alerted the agency to the situation. Based on the information received by the deputies, an Animal Control Officer advised them to place BISHOP under arrest.

BISHOP was arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he was booked on charges of first-degree cruelty to a dog/cat and second-degree cruelty to a dog/cat.

His bonds totaled $21,000 and at the time of writing, records show that BISHOP was released two hours after his arrest.

Jefferson County Animal Control responded to the scene to pick up the furvictims who were then taken to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) for evaluation and treatment.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Levie Pettway praised the deputies’ efforts and the citizen who reported seeing the incident on social media. In a written statement he said: “Our deputies did a great job on using the information and evidence received from a citizen to make an arrest.  We always say, ‘See something, say something,’ and that’s exactly what happenedThe information they provided made a big difference.”

If you have any information about the case, you’re asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Thank you!
