I reached out to the Keokuk Police Department to request an update on the surviving kitten.

Assistant Chief Whitaker kindly provided me with a photo of the kitten, which can be found below in the gallery.

He also told me that Animal Control Officer Crew believes the kitten is approximately 3–4 weeks old, as the kitten’s eyes were just beginning to open. ACO Crew also said, “It was hard to sex the kitten because of how small it is.” However, ACO Crew believes the kitten is a male Tabby.

I also learned from Police Chief Zeth Baum that the kitten was adopted by one of the employees at the transfer station where this incident occurred.

The Keokuk Police Department arrested 62-year-old DONALD WAYNE SLY (pictured).

According to the Department’s press release, on Monday, August 10, 2026, at approximately 10:31 a.m., officers were dispatched to Great River Regional Waste Authority on 111 Carbide Lane to investigate a report of dead kittens.

According to the criminal complaint filed on August 17, 2026, with the South Lee County District Court, the kittens were found deceased in a bag at the Great River Regional Waste Authority transfer station.

The kittens had tragically died as a result of being stomped on while inside the bag. The abhorrent act was caught on video and employees at the transfer station who saw the video, stated that SLY was the perpetrator.

The following Saturday, officer Mason Schau with the Keokuk Police Department went to the transfer station and spoke with SLY. The officer asked SLY questions about Monday’s incident.

According to the criminal complaint, SLY admitted to collecting five kittens near his home and taking them in a bag to a dump, where he stomped on the bag before leaving it with other garbage. The complaint states that four of the five kittens were killed.

SLY was arrested and charged with animal torture – first offense, a Class D felony. At the time of writing, online arrest records show that SLY was released from the Lee County Jail after posting bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Curtis Dial was appointed as SLY’s public defender.
