DAVID DEROME BARNES arrested for abusing and injuring a puppy

- North Carolina, USA -

The Greenville Police Department arrested 34-year-old DAVID DEROME BARNES (pictured).

Greenville Police told me that, late Wednesday evening, August 19, 2026, officers responded to a home at 139 SW Greenville Boulevard to investigate a report of animal abuse.

Officers were advised that the reporting party had seen a male beating a dog.

When officers arrived at the given address, they found a male, later identified as DAVID DEROME BARNES, walking a Pitbull wearing a collar and leash.

According to police, officers witnessed BARNES pick up the puppy by the leash, hold the puppy in the air, and then throw the puppy onto the pavement.

Officers quickly detained BARNES.

According to police, officers observed that the puppy was limping, avoiding putting any weight on his/her back leg, and had blood on his/her paws. Officers also observed two other dogs belonging to BARNES.

BARNES was arrested and transported to the Pitt County Detention Center. He was charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals.

BARNES surrendered the 9-month-old puppy, as well as the two other dogs, to Animal Protective Services. The puppy was taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment of his/her injuries.

BARNES appeared in Pitt County District Court on August 20, 2026, and bond was set at $25,000. At the time of writing, records show that BARNES remains in custody.

According to court records, BARNES is scheduled to appear in court again on September 2, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
