CHANDLER JEREMIAH JAMES arrested in connection with the death of a small dog

The City of Calera Police Department arrested 24-year-old CHANDLER JEREMIAH JAMES (pictured).
According to a press release issued by the department on Friday, September 4, 2026, earlier in the week, police received information about a small dog who had suffered blunt-force trauma and later died from his injuries.
I reached out to Police Chief David Hyche to inquire about the dog, and he told me that the dog was a 6-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Kody.
According to information provided to me by Chief Hyche, Kody was taken to Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham. Despite efforts to save Kody’s precious life, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Chief Hyche was unable to disclose much information about the circumstances surrounding Kody’s death, but he told me that Kody had apparently been severely beaten and that the injury was reported as a blunt-force head injury.
Detectives launched an investigation into the incident, and on August 31, 2026, they obtained an arrest warrant for JAMES.
According to the department's press release, JAMES, from Lowndes County, turned himself in to the Shelby County Jail. Online arrest records maintained by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office show that JAMES was arrested on September 3, 2026, and released the same day after posting a $5,000 bond. JAMES was charged with felony animal cruelty.
Chief Hyche said in a written statement: “We take reports of animal cruelty and abuse very seriously and will seek prosecution of the most serious charges that are supported by the facts. Intentionally harming or torturing a defenseless animal is a very disturbing crime and deserves our best efforts.”
The investigation has concluded, and the case has been referred to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office for felony prosecution.
