A call about a vehicle engulfed in flames ended in the arrest of 56-year-old AUNDRA MATHIS (pictured).
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said that on January 1, 2026, deputies responded to the 600 block of Kayroe Drive in reference to a burning vehicle.
On arrival, a deputy saw “a severely malnourished tan dog chained to a fence” stated the press release.
During the course of the investigation, deputies identified three severely malnourished dogs, a dead bird, another with injuries consistent with cockfighting, and more than sixty (60) chickens and roosters “confined in cages without adequate food, water or shelter,” stated the release.
Additionally, investigators obtained video evidence showing MATHIS strangling a dog and provoking chickens to fight.
When deputies made contact with MATHIS, he was “uncooperative and denied involvement with the animals,” said the sheriff’s office.
According to deputies, the owner of the property stated that MATHIS had been working there. The owner told deputies that the chickens and roosters were MATHIS’.
MATHIS told deputies he was not living on the property and admitted the chickens and roosters were his.
Based on the findings of the investigations, MATHIS was placed under arrest and charged with cockfighting and three counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals.
Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of all animals for safekeeping.
