Animal cruelty investigation leads to rescue of 25 animals from Madison County property

The Granite City Police Department announced that an animal cruelty investigation at a property in the 2400 block of Hodges Avenue resulted in the rescue of 25 animals.

According to police, a mail carrier reported an overwhelming odor coming from the property and contacted 911, prompting authorities to investigate.

According to a press release issued by Granite City Police Major Charles Bremer, a search warrant was executed at the property on August 18, 2026, as part of the investigation.

Police said that two cats and 23 dogs, including 15 puppies, were removed from the property and placed into protective custody.

Authorities said the cats and dogs had been confined to crates and were living in unsanitary conditions.

All of the animals are currently in the care of Granite City Animal Control. In a Facebook post, the agency said: “To say we are overwhelmed is an understatement! Our facility was already at capacity! We need help!”

With the Granite City Animal Control facility already at capacity, the city transformed its Public Works building into a temporary shelter to accommodate the rescued animals.

Granite City Animal Control also appealed for assistance, saying it had dogs available for rescue placement and needed rescue organizations and foster homes. The agency also said it could use Nyla Bones, dog treats and toys.

A suspect connected to the investigation was taken into custody, and criminal charges are pending. Police have not released the suspect’s identity. The investigation remains ongoing.
