On March 11, 2023, the Peoria Police Department received a call reporting a male abusing a dog. The reporting party explained they saw a male brutally beating a dog in the backyard of their neighbor at a home in the 25800 block of N 107th Drive in Peoria.

In a news release, Peoria Police said that Peoria Police Animal Control Officers responded to investigate and learned from the caller that they witnessed a man “abusing a dog by body slamming and kicking it repeatedly.” The caller also advised officers that the despicable actions had been caught on video.

Police said that in the video, the suspect later identified as 42-years-old JEFFREY WRIGHT (pictured), can be seen “kicking the dog, body slamming it, punching it and putting his knee on the dog causing the dog to defecate.”

Animal Control Officers took the Voiceless Victim for medical care and it was determined to have non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said that according to the dog’s guardian, WRIGHT “was just visiting at the house when the incident occurred.” To this regard, Arizona’s Family added that the dog’s guardian told investigators that “she’s had an on-and-off relationship with Wright for a few years and that he stays at the homewhen he appears to be off drugs’.”

The furbaby was then returned to his/her guardian and the case was turned over to Peoria Police Detectives for additional follow up.

Detectives later learned that WRIGHT “had returned to the home and was staying at the residence on a regular basis,” said police.

On the early morning of Thursday, April 6, 2023, Peoria Police Property Crimes Detectives and Peoria Police Animal Control arrested WRIGHT.

The animal abuser was processed at the Peoria Police Department, and later booked at the Maricopa County Jail on a felony Animal Cruelty charge. Police said charges may be added or amended as needed.

The furvictim was “seized due to the suspect having a domestic relationship with the dog owner,” stated the release.

Just think, the witness reported the abuse on March 11, WRIGHT was arrested on April 6 and visited the home “on a regular basis”. How many times has the poor dog been abused before being rescued?

Many thanks to the witness who did not turn a blind eye! See something, make the call, save a life!

On March 13, 2023, Animal Control Deputies with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office responded to a property on 1104 Alexander Road, near Seneca, in regard to a welfare check due to reports of a goat being stuck in a fence and multiple animals who had been abandoned.

ACD knocked on the door but there was no response. While on the scene, they noticed two deceased goats.

A search warrant was then obtained and executed “in order to search for other animals that may be deceased or neglected,” said the Oconee County Sheriff's Office in a press release.

The search led to the discovery of a total of fifteen deceased animals, including eight goats, four dogs, one Bearded Dragon Domesticated Lizard, one cat, and one chicken.

The sheriff’s office said that the “deceased animals were either in a state of decomposition or only skeletal remains were recovered.”

At the property, ACD also found four live Pygmy goats, one live ewe, and one live ram.

Both the live animals and the deceased ones were removed by ACD.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the Oconee County Sheriff's Office arrested 36-years-old JENNIFER MARIE HUNNICUTT (pictured).

As stated in the release, HUNNICUTT “was charged with depriving the animals of necessary sustenance and/or shelter, or by omission, which led [to] the death of some of the animals. Hunnicutt was also charged with abandoning some of the animals without securing another owner or providing the necessities of life.”

From information obtained by Animal Control Deputies it emerged that HUNNICUTT was not seen at the property for approximately a month and a-half.

HUNNICUTT was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center on thirty-five (35) charges of animal cruelty.

The sheriff’s office said HUNNICUTT is facing:

15 counts of Ill Treatment of Animals in General, Torture, which are all felony charges.

14 counts of Abandonment of Animals.

6 counts of Ill Treatment of Animals, In General, Overworking, 1st Offense.

According to the release, HUNNICUTT received a combined $102,975.00 surety bond.

HUNNICUTT was released from jail after posting bond.

Online records show that HUNNICUTT will be back in court on April 25, 2023, at 8:30 a.m.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff’s office declined to share pictures of the animals found on the property as “as those photographs are considered evidence that will be used in the prosecution of the case.”

On March 5, 2023, Deputy Sheriff Megan Noel, with the Collier County Sheriff's Office, was advised by Dr. Morton of the Naples Humane Society, that two male Cocker Spaniels had been brought in by 59-years-old NICKEY COTHRAN (pictured).

According to the incident report, COTHRAN stated he was unable to care for the dogs and fled the humane Society.

Dr. Morton advised the dogs, named Henry and Percy, appeared to be neglected.

Ms. Noel then requested a patrol unit respond to the Humane Society to conduct and document the preliminary investigation.

On March 7, 2023, Ms. Noel went to the Humane Society where Dr. Morton provided her with a summary of the incident. Ms. Noel learned that when COTHRAN dropped Henry and Percy at the Humane Society, he fled without signing surrender paperwork.

Since Percy was in need of immediate medical intervention, due to several conditions, Ms. Noel went to COTHRAN’s home, on 3625 Boca Ciega Drive in Naples and explained to him that if he wanted to surrender Henry and Percy, he needed to sign surrender paperwork.

According to the report, COTHRAN “excitedly uttered, ‘I know they were in bad shape....I feel bad...Their care just got away from me’.”

On March 10, 2023, Ms. Noel received a medical report by Dr. Morton regarding Henry and Percy stating:

Henry passed away before any medical intervention could occur by HSN medical team. Examination of his body revealed severe matting of his coat which covered the majority of his body. By my estimation, the flea infestation numbered in the thousands. It is likely that he had not been groomed, or even brushed, in a year or longer. Henry also had evidence of chronic otitis extrema (ear infection). His remaining incisors were affected by marked dental disease. Internally, the most significant finding was a perforation (hole) through his stomach wall, resulting in the spilling of gastric contents into the abdomen. When not treated with immediate surgery, this condition will lead to severe pain and rapid death.

Percy was found to be suffering from multiple unmanaged health conditions. His coat was severely matted all over and he also had a severe flea infestation. The degree and chronicity of his flea infestation and blood loss was also noted in his bloodwork, where he was shown to have a significant iron deficiency anemia. The matting was most notable on his ears, where the margins of his ear flaps were not able to be accurately identified. Given the status of his coat, it is likely that he also has not been groomed, or even brushed, for a year or longer. There was a chronic, bacterial otitis extrema which has resulted in inflammatory masses in the canals. Percy will likely require surgery to remove his ear canals due to the duration and severity of the infection. Both eyes are affected by glaucoma (abnormal high pressure within eyes) and he is completely blind from the condition. Glaucoma is painful in its acute and chronic stages. His right eye is deficient in tear production, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). Dry-eye also results in discomfort when not appropriately managed. He will require bilateral enucleation (surgical removal of both eyes) in order to cure these ocular conditions and take away his pain.

On the morning under two pounds of hair was removed. This represented approximately 6% of his body weight and took about two hours to complete.

Both Henry and Percy suffered severe, daily, chronic pain and discomfort for what is suspected to be a period of a year or possibly longer.

All of the chronic conditions found would have been preventable or manageable with routine veterinary and grooming care.”

Given all the evidence collected during the investigation, Ms. Noel found probable cause for the arrest of COTHRAN on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

On April 4, 2023, COTHRAN was booked into the Naples Jail Center where he is being held on a $100,000 bond. If he is to be released, he is not able to “own” or come near any animals at all.

COTHRAN will be back in court on May 1, 2023.
