The Hockley County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 55-years-old BILLY CARL SHERROD (pictured) of Anton.

In a news release the sheriff’s office said that on the afternoon of Sunday, August 6, 2023, deputies responded to the 400 block East Ellwood in reference to a potential animal cruelty case involving two dogs.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the reporting party and based on the information obtained, an investigation was opened into “suspected criminal offenses”, stated the release.

From a preliminary investigation, it initially emerged that a male subject, later identified as SHERROD, drove a vehicle with a dog tethered to the back. However, from statements provided by witnesses, it came to light that there were two dogs tethered to the back of the vehicle driven by SHERROD.

As the investigation unfolded deputies on site were advised by dispatchers that a call came in about another disturbance. The caller had reported an altercation involving two males with a third male. It was determined the disturbance call was related to the animal cruelty investigation.

Based on the information gathered at the scene, the incident was referred to the Criminal Investigations Division.

The following day, investigators believed probable cause existed that SHERROD “allegedly intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly caused the death of an animal without consent of the owner, and tortured an animal in an act that caused undue and unjustifiable pain or suffering”, stated the release.

Investigators then requested and obtained an arrest warrant for SHERROD for two felony counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals.

On Monday, August 7, 2023, the murderer was taken into custody and booked into the Hockley County Detention Center.

Records show he was released two days later after posting a $10,000 bond.

According to everythinglubbock, the dog who was killed as a result of being dragged, was located by the sheriff’s office, but the second dog is still missing.

Authorities did not disclose the name of the deceased furbaby so I took the liberty of naming him/her Honey for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.

On Friday August 4, 2023, The Collin County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-years-old RACHEL ANN SWORD (pictured) after several animals were found deceased and some of them were still chained in cages at a property on Graybill Road in Westminster.

Before SWORD’s arrest, the authorities were alerted to the situation multiple times.

Fox 4 Dallas-Forth Worth reports that the sheriff’s office said, “since 2019 there have been sixteen calls of animal complaints or animal cruelty to this exact home.”

According to CBS News Texas, a family of landscapers made the gruesome discovery and reported it to the authorities “more than once.”

After the sheriff’s office followed up the complaint, investigators along with Collin County Animal Control executed a seizure warrant on the property on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

Officials found twenty-four (24) dead dogs “in advanced states of decomposition”, as well as the remains of twelve (12) horses.

The decay on the horses ranged from completely skeletonized to partially skeletonized with skin and fur, generally indicating the deaths were not recent,” stated the affidavit.

Two dogs, two frogs, two horses, one cow, one lizard, and one snake were found alive and placed in the care of Animal Control.

CBS News Texas identified the landscapers as Mike Watrous and his step-son Alston Mays.

Mr. Mays explained to the news agency that they were hired to trim trees and clean up trash.

He said: “We talked to the lady—my boss did...She was saying that there was a dead dog in the back somewhere.”

She obviously lost count of the deceased animals lying around.

Mr. Mays further told CBS News Texas that wherever he looked there were decomposing dogs in cages. Mr. Mays went on to say: “They had a pen in the middle of the yard, no shade, no nothing—dead dog in there...There was a dead animal in each cage.”

At that point the crew called the authorities.

Mr. Watrous told CBS News Texas that his wife called authorities on one occasion after the crew found a dead dog in the yard but it’s unclear whether that incident was ever investigated.

Three years later, the crew shows up to do some work and found themselves in a grisly scenario.

According to FOX 4, the affidavit states that the property belongs to SWORD’s grandparents and they assumed their granddaughter was taking care of the animals. Investigators were pointed to the RV SWORD lived in on the east side of the home. Inside the RV, investigators found more dead dogs.

When the search warrant was executed on Tuesday, SWORD told investigators that she and her daughter were living in the RV. She admitted she was in charge of caring for the animals but blamed depression due to her husband’s recent suicide for not feeding them.

SWORD was charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals, a third-degree felony and cruelty to livestock animals/abuse, a state jail felony.

Online records show SWORD is being held in the Colling County Jail on a $85,000 bond.

The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, the San Antonio Police Department arrested 43-years-old ROBERT E. MARTINEZ (pictured) on a third-degree felony charge for cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by Voice For Us, the day before his arrest MARTINEZ was visiting his girlfriend at the Staybridge Suites hotel, on 56 Northeast Loop 410 when they got into an argument.

During the altercation MARTINEZ was being aggressive and throwing things around the room.

Police tell me that at one point MARTINEZ went into the kitchen, picked up his girlfriend’s kitten, and threw the furbaby in anger toward her but missed. The furbaby was later found “on the floor near the wall surrounded by blood.” The innocent soul died from the injuries he/she sustained as a result of being thrown.

Like a true coward, MARTINEZ fled the scene because individuals like him hit animals and women but do not face law enforcement!

Animal Control Services responded to the scene and recovered the body of the Voiceless Victim.

A warrant was then issued for MARTINEZ’s arrest and after he was located and placed under arrest, he was booked into the Bexar County Jail.

At this time of writing, records show MARTINEZ is being held on a $10,000 bond.

According to online court records, MARTINEZ is due in court on September 13, 2023.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

I have requested additional information about the furvictim. I will post updates as they become available.
