~ Update: July 28, 2023

I have received an email from Mr. Nolan Pitkin who is the Assistant District Attorney in charge of prosecuting animal cruelty cases in Jefferson County. Mr. Pitkin is also a member of the Jefferson County Animal Cruelty Task Force.

Mr. Pitkin told me the dog removed from VIRGIL-WILKINSON’s care and custody is a male Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (pictured). The furvictim’s name and age have not been confirmed but Mr. Pitkin believes the furbaby “is still a young dog (between eight months and a year and a half).”

To my question whether the dog is VIRGIL-WILKINSON’s, Mr. Pitkin said: “It is my understanding that this dog does, in fact, belong to the defendant in this case.”

Mr. Pitkin then said about the furvictim: “I had the opportunity to meet him this morning, and he enjoyed all of the attention and treats! He is safe and is being treated great at the shelter right now.

No other information could be disclosed as the case is still active.

~ Update: Jul 28, 2023

In response to my inquiry about the dog, Watertown Police Detective Sergeant Giaquinto told me in an email that “Further details can’t be disclosed at this time as this case is still pending prosecution and is therefore considered open.”

I have also emailed Jefferson County District Attorney Kristyna S. Mills and requested the same information. Should I receive a response, I will rectify the article accordingly.

~ Original Story:

The Watertown City Police Department charged 25-years-old DALONTAE VIRGIL-WILKINSON in connection with a case where a defenseless dog was repeatedly struck.

According to a press release by the Watertown City Police obtained by Voice For Us, on the morning of Thursday, July 27, 2023, police responded to an animal abuse complaint at an apartment on 1223 Faichney Drive.

The police allege that VIRGIL-WILKINSON struck a dog five times, causing the furbaby to yelp.

They additionally say that VIRGIL-WILKINSON then proceeded to pick up the furvictim by the neck and carried him/her down a set of stairs.

VIRGIL-WILKINSON, residing at 1221 Faichney Drive apartment 7, was charged with one misdemeanor count of Torturing an Animal.

The assailant was arraigned at Watertown City Court before Judge Anthony M. Neddo who issued a warrant to remove the dog. Jefferson County Dog Control took custody of the furvictim.

Judge Neddo released VIRGIL-WILKINSON on his own recognizance. Court records show that VIRGIL-WILKINSON is expected back in court on August 3, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.

The Watertown City Police Department did not disclose additional details about the Voiceless Victim nor his/her current well-being status. I have emailed the Department and requested information. If I get a response, I will post an update.

On July 17, 2023, 38-years-old MONICA ORTEGA (pictured) was arrested for failing to properly care for her five dogs.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by Voice For Us, on December 12, 2022, Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) responded to a Louisville residence to investigate a report about dogs who were being kept in a garage and not being properly cared for.

The complaint stated that LMAS Officer Ratliff called ORTEGA to the property, “she took ownership of the dogs” and was issued “a violation to get the dogs licensed.”

On January 18, 2023, LMAS returned to the property to conduct a follow up and reported that “the dogs appeared leaner and the floor of the garage was covered in feces, urine and debris.”

Officer Ratliff learned that ORTEGA had provided limited care to the dogs as she was “coming and going from the home.”

On February 24, 2023, Officer Clark went to the home to find out that ORTEGA had moved out leaving behind all five furbabies in poor condition. In the meantime, one of the dogs gave birth to six puppies. Officer Clark’s attempt to contact ORTEGA by phone was unsuccessful.

On March 13, 2023, Animal Control Lieutenant Forner went to the property “to document conditions and discuss impoundment of the dogs”, stated the complaint.

Lt. Forner found dogs and puppies “blocked off into a section of the garage that had feces, urine and trash throughout the space.” The mother of the puppies was found emaciated. There was a bowl of water and according to the complaint, “LMAS provided dog food for the family living in the residence.”

Two days later, on March 15, 2023, the puppies and their mom were removed and a reclaiming notice was posted at the residence.

On April 18, 2023, the remaining Voiceless Victims were also FINALLY removed!

The complaint, dated May 11, 2023, stated: “As of today's date, deft has not contacted LMAS nor has she reclaimed any of her pets.”

ORTEGA was arrested on July 17, 2023, and at this time of writing records show she is still in custody.

I have emailed LMAS and requested additional information about the furvictims. If I receive a response, I will post an update.

I wonder why it took so long to remove the dogs and why between December 12, 2022, and February 24, 2023, no one noticed the pregnant dog!

ORETGA is not the only one who failed the Voiceless Victims!

On the evening of Saturday, April 22, 2023, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic violence report at a residence in the 300 block of Houston Road in Center Point.

In a press release, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said that during the course of the investigation, “deputies discovered a small dog that had been egregiously abused.”

Deputies called in the Greater Birmingham Humane Society for assistance with the furvictim.

The dog, an adult Schnauzer mix named Krisshy, “was suffering from skin and fur loss, was gravely malnourished and had endured what appeared to be, long-term neglect and abuse,” stated the release. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society immediately took Krisshy for treatment.

In a video published on Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s Facebook page, its Chief Executive Officer, Allison Black Cornelius, explained that Krisshy was so malnourished that they initially believed she was a puppy. Krisshy sustained burns over much of her body, traumatic bruising, evidence of beating, and severe malnourishment, all consistent with long term abuse. Ms. Cornelius said Krisshy lived in a small wire crate with no water, food, or shade.

An investigation conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office determined that 31-years-old DERRIAS ALEXANDER WALDROP (pictured), was the suspect in Krisshy’s abuse case as well as the suspect in the domestic violence incident.

According to Ms. Cornelius, “witnesses said that they have seen this man kicking her and beating her across the yard multiple times.”

It’s unclear whether these witnesses have reported the abuse. To this regard, I have emailed the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to find out more. I want to know why a domestic violence report was needed to discover Krisshy's situation and rescue her!

Krisshy is currently under intensive veterinary care and has a long way to go in her recovery.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies located WALDROP on the night of Monday, April 24, 2023, in the parking lot of an apartment complex near the location of the initial investigation.

WALDROP was transported to the Jefferson County Jail and booked for the charges of Cruelty to a Dog or Cat 1st Degree and Domestic Violence 3rd Degree.

The sheriff’s office said that while WALDROP was being booked, it was determined that he “had an amount of fentanyl in his possession that was confiscated by deputy personnel.” Following this, Promoting Prison Contraband was then added to his other charges. At the time of this writing, online records show that WALDROP is being held on a $36,000 bond.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway said: “Heinous acts such as this, will not be ignored. We are proud of the partnership we have built with The Greater Birmingham Humane Society and we will continue to work together to stop the abuse and neglect of defenseless animals.”

If you wish and can afford to donate toward Krisshy’s medical care, please click here. Thank you!

Voice For Us believes that those who witness animal cruelty and fail to report it are just as guilty!
