SUSAN E. KELLY, with a history of hoarding animals, charged with dozens of counts of animal neglect

On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrested 70-years-old SUSAN E. KELLY (pictured).


The sheriff’s office said in a press release that the arrest is the result of an investigation into an animal neglect case.

“The case involved animals living in inadequate shelter, poor living conditions, and were malnourished due to lack of food and water readily available to them”, stated the release.


The investigation was initially launched after complaints of a loose dog at a residence located at State Highway 349 in Mayfield that is occupied by KELLY.

The complaints then led to larger concerns about animals at the property and on July 25, 2022, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant.


In a press release of July 26, 2022, the Fulton County Regional SPCA said that KELLY’s property “is home to ‘Kelly's Haven’ a ‘rescue organization’ with a history of animal hoarding and cruelty complaints spanning over decades.”


Officials discovered approximately:


52 dogs; 50 living, 2 deceased

2 goats

2 rabbits

1 horse

Over a dozen ducks and chickens


The poor animals were found to be living “primarily outdoors and in filthy uninhabitable conditions. Clean water and appropriate shelter were scarce”, said , the Fulton County Regional SPCA.


The seizure of the VOICELESS VICTIMS was led and organized by both the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society and Fulton County Regional SPCA with sheltering assistance from Ayres Memorial Shelter.

The poor souls were evaluated and treated by veterinarians and placed in the care of the above-mentioned agencies.


On August 10, 2022, a Facebook post by James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society read: “The animals continue to receive necessary care. Our legal counsel is preparing to file for a security bond in this matter to ensure that the defendant pays for the care and housing of the animals during the pendency of the criminal matter or seeking their forfeiture to either us (James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society) or the SPCA.”


The Fulton County Sheriff's Office said that KELLY was charged with fifty-five counts of torturing or injuring animals/failure to provide sustenance, which is a Class A Misdemeanor.

She was issued appearance tickets to appear at the Town Of Mayfield court at a later date.

On a separate note, The Daily Gazette reports that: “Kelly was the subject of an animal cruelty case in 2011. During that case, the Sheriff’s Department said it had received multiple complaints about the property. At that time, around 300 animals were found on the property — from dogs and cats to livestock and parrots. In that case, the animals had been receiving food, but the living conditions were below standard and a small number of the animals had to have emergency care.”

Two dogs who had been missing since July, found shot dead in their head and their legs bound

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said that on August 2, 2022, deputies were made aware of the killing of two dogs in the area of rural Cumberland.


According to the sheriff’s office, the two deceased dogs were found near a bridge on 660th Street, close to Tucson Road. Before being thrown over the bridge, both dogs had been shot in the head and their back legs had been bound. The sheriff’s office added that both furbabies had been missing since July 27, 2022.


FOX 34 identified Mr. Logan Lank as the dogs’ guardian.

Lank said that his dogs, a 1-year-old female Pitbull named Bella, and a 3-year-old black Labrador named Pepper, were snatched from his home in Cumberland. The bridge where Bella and Pepper were found is just two miles away from his home.


Lank told FOX 34 that when Bella and Pepper went missing, the community was a big help with the search which sadly ended with the heartbreaking discovery.

“All of the neighbors around here loved them. I’ve never had any complaints about them,” he said.

Additionally, according to Lank, the community has donated money towards a reward for any information that would lead to an arrest.


The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating these murders and is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren said whoever did it could face animal cruelty charges and believes, based on pictures, that the dogs were killed around the day they went missing.


Speak up for the VOICELESS VICTIMS. They deserve justice and their murderer deserves to begin his/her rotting process in prison first and then end it in hell!

DAVID A. HENDRIX arrested after nine dogs were rescued from deplorable conditions

On Wednesday, August 3, 2022, the nonprofit Animal Rescue Corps rescued nine dogs from a property on Savely Drive in Hendersonville.

The organization aptly called the rescue “Operation Out of the Dark.”


The Hendersonville Police Department said in a news release that on August 3, 2022, the investigation of property maintenance code violations resulted in the initiation of an animal cruelty investigation conducted by the department’s detectives.


Detectives contacted Veterinarian Dr. Heather Schwartz, who along with a representative of Animal Rescue Corps, was able to respond and quickly assess the need for immediate intervention and treatment.


Detectives then executed a search warrant at the property and with the assistance of Dr. Schwartz, Animal Rescue Corps, and Hendersonville Animal Control, all nine dogs were rescued from the deplorable conditions they were found in.


In a Facebook post, Animal Rescue Corps said: “This was no place for the living. The homeowners moved out years ago -- but they left their dogs behind in this house that was more like a tomb. Windows sealed up. No lights. No air conditioning. Doors wedged shut from years of waste. Buckets of food and water were pushed in through a crack in the door, but it was years since a caring human stood in this house.”


ARC also said that in some areas in the house, feces was more than a foot deep and compacted with trash and bones of several dead dogs.


Part of the Facebook post said: “We had to shovel a path for the door to open enough to bring our tactical equipment and teams inside.

Inside, the remains of dead dogs are scattered throughout the home. Bones by where the buckets were pushed in through the crack in the door speak to a desperate fight for survival. There are mothers who have given birth recently, but no surviving puppies. The surviving dogs are gentle and terrified, blinking from the sudden light from our spotlights and in desperate need of medical, physical, and emotional care.”


Animal Rescue Corps mentioned Hawkeye, one of the dogs rescued from that hellish place and said that the furbaby lost his sight “likely from years of living in the potent ammonia fumes inside.”


Many of the dogs are suffering from “open wounds, dental disease, sores, corneal scarring, emaciation, dehydration, and more”, explained ARC.


Needless to say, that Animal Rescue Corps needs our help to help these VOICELESS VICTIMS.

As for the criminal aspect of this heartbreaking case, the Hendersonville Police Department arrested the homeowner, identified as 57-years-old DAVID A. HENDRIX (pictured).

On Thursday, August 4, 2022, HENDRIX was booked into the Sumner County Jail on nine counts of aggravated animal cruelty. He was released after posting bond.

HENDRIX’s General Sessions Court date has been set for August 24, 2022, at 9:00 a.m.


WKRN reports that Tim Woodward, ARC’s Executive Director, said: “We are grateful that law enforcement reached out for assistance for these animals who desperately need medical care and attention. The level of suffering we witnessed here is some of the worst we’ve ever seen.”


Police said the investigation is ongoing.
