The SPCA Westchester rescued a hundred and fifty (150) cats and kittens from a Yorktown Heights home after its Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) received an urgent call from the Yorktown Police Department requesting assistance.

Police discovered the cats when on Monday, January 30, 2023, they went to the home in the 100 block of Cordial Road to perform a wellness check and found the homeowners, a man and a woman in their 50’s, deceased in the bedroom.

The SPCA said in a news release that the felines were found “living in filth and squalor and being hoarded inside a small dilapidated home.”

Officials were unable to clear the scene until the SPCA’s rescue team members removed a majority of the cats, who were found trapped in every room of the home, including the walls and ceilings. The conditions were absolutely horrific,” stated the release.

The SPCA said that the all the cats, who appear to be Abyssinian mixes, “are sick and suffering with upper respiratory, eye and skin infections, malnutrition, dehydration, and sadly, some have more severe injuries that require immediate medical attention.” The organization also said that the VOICELESS VICTIMS were starving “and had likely not eaten or had access to water in many days.”

The stressful situation caused one of the furbabies to give birth on the way to the SPCA’s Rescue Center and many others appear to be pregnant.

Even after all that they've been through, the cats are incredibly sweet and just want to be loved,” said the SPCA.

The SPCA has described this rescue as the largest in their history and you don’t need me to tell you that extraordinary support is now needed to help the organization face this new challenge.

These innocent souls have been neglected for so long and are now in desperate need of veterinary care and rehabilitation which has been anticipated that will cost over $40,000.

The SPCA is understandably asking for donations. Rescue partners from Best Friends Animal Society, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, Westchester Humane Society, Rescue Right, and Columbia Green Humane Society have come forward to help.

Following an investigation into animal abuse and neglect, on the morning of Tuesday, January 31, 2023, deputies with the Animal Services Unit of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at a property on 138 Tall Tree Lane in Leicester and arrested 39-years-old LINDSEY TREVOR RUE (pictured).

The animals found at the home were suffering from neglect and were removed with the assistance of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

The ASPCA said they rescued more than forty (40) neglected dogs, primarily Poodle mixes. In a press release, the agency also said: “The dogs, including nine newborn puppies, along with a tortoise, a rabbit, a fish, and several birds, were found living in neglectful conditions in an overcrowded mobile home in Leicester. “

Sadly, one horse was found dead from starvation.

KAKE.com reports that Major John Ledford with the Buncombe Sheriff’s Office said investigators have been working the case since November 2022, when the agency began receiving reports about potential animal neglect on RUE’s property.

As indicated in the press release by the ASPCA, the organization is assisting the sheriff’s office “with operational planning and animal removal, evidence collection and crime scene processing, investigative and legal assistance, veterinary and behavioral forensics exams, daily care, and providing the dogs with medical and behavioral support.”

Ms. Alyssa Fleck, a spokeswoman for the ASPCA, said: “Since we don’t have ownership of the dogs, it’s too early for us to begin exploring placement options.”

RUE is charged with felony kill animal by starvation, felony animal cruelty, child neglect, and resist, delay or obstruct. She appeared in court on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, and court records show that she is due back on February 22, 2023.

The sheriff’s office said additional charges may be forthcoming as this investigation continues.

On January 28, 2023, the Pike County Sheriff’s Office received an animal cruelty complaint at a property on 379 Wynn Road in Piketon.

Deputies responded to the address and found a deceased dog, tied to a tractor near the roadway, who appeared to have been beaten.

On the property, deputies then discovered over forty (40) dead dogs, many dead chickens, one live pig, and eighty (80) live dogs who were in “various states of malnutrition/emaciated condition,” said Pike County Sheriff Tracy D. Evans.

According to a news release by the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, a search warrant was executed at the property and multiple organizations responded to the scene to assist with the investigation including the Ross County Humane Society, Pike County Humane Agents, Pet Pals volunteers, and the Pike County Commissioners.

Many of the animals were taken to remote locations to receive care and be assessed by a veterinarian. Two of the deceased animals were taken for a necropsy.

Authorities arrested the resident of the property, 62-years-old WYNDAN SKYE (pictured), and charged him with cruelty to companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.

SKYE was arraigned on January 30, 2023, and bond was set at $40,000. Online records show he is still in custody. SKYE’s preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 6, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in Pike County Court.

Sheriff Evans advised that the investigation is ongoing and will be submitted to the Pike County Prosecutor’s Office to see if additional charges will be filed to be reviewed by a grand jury.
