About time!!!

Euro Group For Animals reports that after having adopted a temporary ban linked to the COVID-19 outbreaks in mink farms and the potential impact on public health, Italy decided to permanently ban fur farming as of January 1, 2022.

Over 60,000 minks were killed every year in Italy purely for the value of their fur, but now, thanks to the endless efforts of Italian animal protection organizations and the mobilization of citizens, this cruelty will come to an end.

Today, Tuesday, December 21, 2021, “the Italian Senate Budget Committee approved an amendment that will shutter the country’s 10 remaining fur farms within six months and enact a permanent ban on fur farming throughout Italy”, reports The Humane Society Of The United States.

As reported by ANSA, the amendment allows existing fur farms to keep their animals until June 30, 2022.

Mr. Simone Pavesi, Animal Free Fashion Area Manager at LAV, said: “Italy is a more civilized country, we have put an end to a cruel, anachronistic, unjustifiable industry that has no more reason to exist in a civil society where the value of respect for animals, as sentient beings, is always more widespread and rooted.”

Ms. Kitty Block, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States and CEO of Humane Society International, wrote in her blog: “Together, we can end the fur trade, and once we do, other industries that profit from animal cruelty will surely take notice.”

It is with a heavy heart that after hearing the news on TV I am reporting the death of 69-years-old MP (Member of Parliament) Sir David Amess (pictured below).

The nonprofit Cruelty Free International wrote in a Facebook post: “The team here is devastated by the awful murder of Sir David Amess MP. Sir David worked tirelessly for animals in laboratories.”

Father of five, Sir David sponsored many parliamentary bills. One of his most significant achievements is the Protection Against Cruel Tethering Act (1988).

The Protection Against Cruel Tethering Act came about as a result of his long-standing concern for animal welfare, supported by the National Farmers Union.

According to his website, Sir David campaigned to stop the testing of domestic products on animals, tackled the illegal wildlife trade and fought for an end to puppy farming.

As reported by the Evening Standard, Sir David “opposed the culling of badgers and was one of the few Tory MPs in favor of a foxhunting ban.”

The Evening Standard further reports that: “In his most recent Commons intervention, on September 23, he called for a debate on ‘animal welfare generally, cruelty to animals and the welfare of farmyard animals’ to mark World Animal Day on October 4.”

Sir David died on the afternoon of Friday, October 15, “after being stabbed at his constituency surgery in Essex”, at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

Police arrested the suspect and recovered the knife.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Sir David had an “outstanding record of passing laws to help the most vulnerable.”

Sir David, a devout Catholic, was also an anti-abortion activist and patron of the Right To Life charity.

Thank you, Sir David for everything you have done for defenseless beings.

I hope you will be able to protect them all from where you are.

My condolences to Sir David’s family and friends.

An Italian TV Show called “Mattino 5”, responded to complaints submitted by residents of a village called Corigliano-Rossano, which is in the Calabria region of southern Italy.

Residents are complaining about the growing number of stray dogs whom they believe to be aggressive and dangerous.

Residents say they are locked in their homes because they are afraid to come out and encounter one of the dogs.

One of the co-hosts of the show, FRANCESCO VECCHI (pictured below), has interviewed the mayor of the village and asked him how he plans to resolve the issue.

The mayor, Mr. Flavio Stasi (pictured below), explained that his hands are tied because first of all the local shelter is under investigation and cannot intervene to help.

Secondly, at the moment there is not a unit contracted by the city in charge of picking up stray animals.

A video showed during the program depicted dogs wandering the streets under the summer heat looking for food and water.

Mama dogs with their newborn babies could be seen at night rummaging through trash cans looking for food.

I resented the position the presenter took on the issue and it infuriated me to my very core!

VECCHI, described the whole situation as if the dogs need to be eliminated because they cause a serious problem to the poor residents but did not emphasize the fact that if those poor furbabies are homeless, it’s because they have been cruelly abandoned, and/or they were never spayed/neutered.

VECCHI also mentioned that people have been attacked by the dogs but there were no medical reports shown during the show to support what he said.

Many viewers have left comments on the show’s Facebook page expressing disappointment and concern.

They rightfully said that the way the situation was presented by the tv show, may trigger people to go and hurt the poor dogs.

We now fear for the well-being of those innocent souls!

This is not the first time that VECCHI speaks about animals as if they are “unwanted guests” on this planet.

A few weeks ago, while talking about parrots and parakeets from the Amazon rainforest who inexplicably invaded the city of Genova, he did not mention the beautiful colors flying over the sky, instead, he focused on the noise they make with their chirping.

Parrots and parakeets are loving the climate and are feeling safe in Genova because there are no predators hunting these species. Reportedly, they have shown aggression towards bats and sparrows.

On other occasions, while VECCHI was talking about how Rome has been dealing for so long with the issue of wild boars running through the streets looking for food, he once again accentuated how dangerous and inconvenient their presence is, instead of focusing on the bad administration by the mayor!

It's my opinion that he instigates people to look at animals as a nuisance and not as beings entitled to inhabit this planet as much as humans.

With regards to the dogs in Calabria I must say this, it’s amazing how people do not come forward to speak up against Mafia and ‘Ndrangheta, but then, they come forward to protest about innocent animals who did not choose to be in the situations they are in!

Mafia and ‘Ndrangheta do not scare you, but animals do?

Italy, you really make me laugh!!!
