ROBERT LEE DRUMMOND faces animal cruelty charges for abandoning his senior dog in a dumpster

- Florida, USA -

On Thursday, May 27, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrested 65-year-old ROBERT LEE DRUMMOND (pictured below), on felony charges of animal cruelty.

DRUMMOND, former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office assistant chief, was booked into the Duval County Jail.

As reported by multiple sources, DRUMMOND is accused of putting his dog in a metal dumpster and walking away.

FirstCoastNews reports that the dumpster was found behind Krystal fast food restaurant on 5808 Normandy Boulevard.

The news outlet further reports that according to the police report DRUMMOND dumped his dog after trying to get her euthanized due to “her age, being blind, deaf, and going to the bathroom in the house.”

DRUMMOND told officers that the vet was “taking too long” so he decided to abandon her.

As reported by News4Jax, a man opened the dumpster and found the furbaby who was still alive.

Another man who witnessed that and wishes to remain anonymous told News4Jax he kept going back and forth getting the dog water and said: “The dog must have drank [drunk] like three or four bowls of water.”

Animal Care and Protective Services responded to the scene to discover a medium-sized white/brown/tan dog with no collar or tags but were able to find the microchip that led to DRUMMOND.

DRUMMOND told detectives that the dog, named Sheeba, was “more” his wife’s than his.

At DRUMMOND’s first court appearance, a judge set his bond at $2,503 and ordered him to have no contact with animals.

Online records show that DRUMMOND is slated to be in court on the morning of June 17.

Mr. Ken Jefferson who is is a former JSO officer and crime and safety expert for New4Jax, has worked with DRUMMOND and said: “I know him very well, and it’s not only surprising, but it’s very disappointing. You never want to hear this kind of news about a former colleague, particularly one involved in law enforcement.”
