Deputy Jasmine P. Fain, the Animal Control Officer who is investigating this case, told me in an email that the deceased puppies “were sent to Virginia Tech for further analysis.”
As for the living puppy, she told me: “he has received medical care and is back at our shelter doing well and gaining weight. We named him “Chance.”

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to the public for information regarding the discovery of four abandoned puppies with only one found alive.
In a news release the sheriff’s office said that on the morning of Wednesday, November 2, 2022, deputies were notified that four puppies had been found abandoned. The furbabies were callously left inside an animal carrier and dumped in a field near the 6000 block of Dyers Store Road in Martinsville.
When Animal Control Deputies responded to the scene, they found that only one of the puppies was still alive and was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment.
According to the release, the puppies were a mixed breed estimated to be 10 weeks old.
The sheriff’s office said that a nearby resident reported seeing a vehicle parked right where the puppies where found, on Sunday, October 30, 2022.
The suspected vehicle “was described as a 2008 – 2010 Honda Ridgeline, beige color, driven by a black male,” stated the release.
