On Friday, November 18, 2022, Boulder District Judge Patrick Butler sentenced 27-years-old NATHANIEL KYLE STARK (pictured), a convicted sex offender, to twelve years in the Department of Corrections.
In August 2019, STARK moved in with his girlfriend and within three months of the couple living together, two of the girlfriend’s cats, Toby and Xander, died. Veterinarians concluded that one of the furbabies died of head trauma and strangulation.
In February 2020, STARK severely beat his girlfriend's dog named Caidee and authorities removed the furbaby from their custody.
Although this filthy murderer will be spending the next twelve years of his useless life behind bars, we need to understand that the sentence does not relate to the aggravated animal cruelty charges for which STARK pleaded guilty.
In fact, as reported by Daily Camera, the sentence is for a second-degree assault case from 2016, for which STARK was on sex offense specific probation at the time.
The animal cruelty charge would have carried only a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Judge Butler did issue a three-year prison sentence on that case, but that sentence will be served concurrently to the 12-year term.
Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a Facebook post: “As Deputy District Attorney Jenny McClintock explained, ‘The defendant’s abuse of his partner’s animals in this case was just one act of violence in his criminal history. It is important to take these cases seriously as they involve victims who have no voice and are often used as coercive controlling tactics in a domestic violence relationship. We are pleased with the sentence that the court imposed and want to thank our law enforcement partners for the exceptional investigation in this case.’”

On Friday, May 13, in Boulder District Court, 27-years-old NATHANIEL KYLE STARK (pictured) virtually pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals and failure to verify location as a sex offender from the Boulder County Jail.
STARK is accused of abusing his girlfriend’s two cats and dog and then fleeing the state.
One other felony count of aggravated animal cruelty and three misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty were dismissed as part of the agreement.
Times-Call reports that STARK, a court-designated ‘sexually violent predator,’ “is facing up to four years in prison for the animal cruelty charge as the plea agreement did not include any sentence stipulations.”
STARK is scheduled to be sentenced on August 5, 2022.

26-years-old NATHANIEL KYLE STARK (pictured below) is accused of abusing his girlfriend’s two cats and dog.
In Boulder District Court STARK pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and three misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.
Times-Call reports that STARK is set for a five-day trial starting May 23, 2022, with a motions hearing on May 2, 2022.
Additionally, STARK, a court-designated “sexually violent predator”, pleaded not guilty to four counts of violating bond conditions and one count of failing to register as a sex offender and is set for trial on those charges in two separate two-day trials starting June 6, 2022.
With reference to the animal cruelty offense, according to an affidavit, in October 2019, STARK was living with his girlfriend who had two cats named Toby and Xander, and a dog named Caidee.
At one point the girlfriend found Xander injured but she thought that maybe Caidee had caused it. Then, later the same month, Xander was taken to the vet due to injuries that STARK said were caused by Caidee.
The vet, however, determined that Xander’s injuries were not consistent with a dog attack.
The following month, Xander was found with torn hind nails and a cut on his face.
On that occasion STARK told his girlfriend that Xander got injured by getting into a blender that was in a cabinet.
Later that month, Xander was taken to animal hospital and sadly passed away.
A necropsy was performed on the furbaby and results showed that Xander died from either head trauma or suffocation. The necropsy also revealed several new and old fractures and these findings prompted vets to alert animal control for suspected abuse.
The other cat, Toby, also died the same month of unknown causes, “reportedly just a few days after Stark stepped on it”, reports Times-Call.
In February 2020, STARK’s girlfriend noticed that Caidee had trouble defecating and had blood in her urine and trouble standing.
Caidee was taken to the vet who found bruising between her hind legs “which appeared to be caused by trauma commonly seen in abuse.”
That day, the girlfriend had left Caidee with STARK when she went out and said that before leaving, Caidee seemed fine.
Furthermore, veterinarians said it appeared that the injuries were caused very recently.
When police questioned STARK about Caidee, he said he believed someone else broke into the house and hurt the dog. But he also told police that that while his girlfriend was at work in the mornings, he was often alone with the cats and the dog for several hours.
Police then noted that all the furbabies had been found injured usually following those periods so Caidee was removed by the Longmont Humane Society.
STARK was arrested on March 3, 2020, on suspicion of two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and three misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.
He was released after posting a $3,000 bond!
I have emailed Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle and requested additional information about Caidee. If I get a response, I will post an update.
In 2016, STARK was arrested by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault, second-degree assault and unlawful sexual contact. He ultimately pleaded guilty to assault and two counts of unlawful sexual contact and was sentenced to one year in jail followed by 18 months of work release and 10 years of sex offender intensive supervised probation.
