A K9 Officer with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office apprehended 32-year-old MARCUS DYSHAUN CUMBEE (pictured), who had outstanding warrants with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The facts that eventually led to CUMBEE’s arrest date back to January 29, 2025, when deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Cherokee Path Lane after a new property owner requested assistance.
Upon arrival, deputies found three adult dogs roaming freely with one of them who appeared to have recently given birth.
A further inspection yielded the discovery of six small puppies and sadly the remains of a deceased dog as well as another deceased dog who was found “caged at the rear of the property,” said Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis.
Animal Cruelty Investigators were called to the scene to complete an inspection regarding the dogs and their care.
On May 13, 2025, deputies along with agents from the US Marshal Task Force were surveilling CUMBEE and working to track him down for his outstanding warrants. When deputies and agents attempted to approach CUMBEE, he fled into the woods and was later apprehended by a K9 Officer.
CUMBEE, of Cross, was placed under arrest and transported to hospital for medical treatment before being booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center. CUMBEE was charged with two counts of ill treatment to animals with cruelty and four counts of animal abandonment.
According to a press release by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, in Orangeburg County CUMBEE is facing charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm into a dwelling.
