- New York, USA -

On the night of June 28, 2023, the Norwood Village Police Department received a report about a dog in Norwood Lake.

Responding officers found a deceased female Pitbull in the water at the municipal boat launch on Norwood Lake.

The Department then took to Facebook the heartbreaking story and reached out to the community for assistance in locating the Voiceless Victim’s guardian. Part of the post read: “We are looking for anyone who may have information about this incident, or the dog.  Below is a picture of the collar.  The dog will be taken care of with respect by our agency until the owner can be located.

After a lengthy investigation, police announced that on February 6, 2024, 41-years-old JOSHUA D. BROWNELL (pictured via Facebook), of Potsdam, was arrested and charged with one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.

BROWNELL was released on a ticket to appear at Town of Potsdam Court in March 2024.

WWNY reports that Norwood Village Police Chief Shawn Wells said the public helped solve the case. BROWNELL was identified as the dog’s guardian and on his Facebook account, police found pictures of the Voiceless Victim, a brown and white Pitbull named Diamond with a distinctive pattern.

Police were assisted in their investigation by the Potsdam Animal Control Officer and the Potsdam Humane Society.
