BERNICE ROSE SMITH arrested after two dogs in her care were found severely malnourished

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested 38-year-old BERNICE ROSE SMITH (pictured) as a result of an investigation into the severe neglect of two dogs found in her care.

On the early afternoon of July 14, 2026, deputies responded to a call for service at an apartment in the 800 block of East 120^th Avenue in Tampa.

According to the press release by the sheriff’s office, deputies found two dogs who were “extremely underweight and severely malnourished. Their ribs, hips, and spinal bones were visibly protruding due to their condition.”

The sheriff’s office tells me that one of the two dogs is a 6-year-old Husky/Shepherd mix named Aspen, and the other dog is a 2-year-old Shepherd mix “that does not have a name.”

Hillsborough County Animal Services were called in and removed both furvictims from the apartment for medical evaluation and treatment.

On July 23, 2026, detectives received veterinary reports from the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center documenting that both dogs were emaciated and suffering from numerous medical conditions consistent with prolonged neglect.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for SMITH and she was taken into custody on July 27, 2026. She was charged with two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

The sheriff’s office tells me both dogs are doing well now and they are expected to make a full recovery!

In a written statement, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said: “This case is a heartbreaking reminder that animals rely on us to provide them with basic necessities like food, water, shelter, and medical care. The suffering these dogs endured was completely preventable. I am grateful to our detectives, Hillsborough County Animal Services, and the Pet Resource Center for their dedication to protecting animals and holding those responsible accountable.”

Sheriff Chronister explained that the pictures of the furvictims were taken approximately two weeks after they were rescued and in a couple of photos they can be seen with the detective who investigated the case.

The sheriff also pointed out the dogs’ “remarkable recovery serves as a powerful reminder of what is possible when neglected animals receive the care, compassion, and medical treatment they deserve.”

The investigation is still ongoing.
