The Lee County Sheriff's Office arrested 69-year-old JOHNNY LEE DAVIS (pictured) in an animal cruelty case which Sheriff Carmine Marceno slammed as “disgusting and unacceptable.”
During a press conference, Sheriff Marceno explained that on February 26, 2026, a motorist witnessed DAVIS dragging a tethered dog along the road behind his vehicle.
The witness told deputies that she began honking at the vehicle because she did not know if the driver realized there was a dog attached to the hitch of truck. She also recorded the incident and confronted DAVIS before dialing 911. The incident happened at the intersection of Bartholomew Drive and Laurel Lane in Suncoast Estates, and the vehicle was described as a black Ford F-150 truck.
Responding deputies saturated the area, located DAVIS’ truck, and conducted a traffic stop.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, deputies found blood throughout the interior and the exterior of the vehicle which they believed belonged to the dog.
Deputies then executed a search warrant at DAVIS’ home and found the furvictim, a two-year-old Australian Cattle named Ruthie, in “unimaginable pain and suffering from severe injuries,” said Sheriff Marceno. Ruthie’s injuries included extensive road rash, and flesh damage.
At the press conference one of the reporters asked the sheriff for how long DAVIS had been dragging Ruthie before the call was made to 911. The sheriff did not give a specific time and said that deputies responded immediately. Sheriff Marceno also said that after dragging Ruthie, DAVIS left her in pain at home, and he went on to go to “Walmart and other places to do his ordinary business” making no attempt to provide medical assistance to the furvictim.
Lee County Domestic Animal Services removed Ruthie for immediate emergency care. Sheriff Marceno said that despite the grave trauma Ruthie experienced, she is a fighter and is still alive.
DAVIS was placed under arrest and was booked into the Lee County Jail on one count of aggravated animal cruelty. Court records show that DAVIS is scheduled to appear at Lee County Circuit Court on March 30, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.
The sheriff said that DAVIS has no criminal history regarding animal abuse and added that if he is convicted in this case, he will be added to the Animal Abuse Registry which will prohibit him from having another animal for only five years.
Sheriff Marceno said in a written statement: “𝙄𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙮, 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡, 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙, 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙛 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙤. I echo Sheriff Marceno’s appeal “See something, say something, make the call” because “Reporting saves lives. Silence enables cruelty.”
