Investigation underway after tiny 1-year-old Chihuahua found abandoned and in terrible condition

- Massachusetts, USA -

The nonprofit Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) and the Malden Police Department are investigating after a tiny Chihuahua was found in Malden.

A Good Samaritan found the male 1-year-old furbaby, on Monday, July 25, huddling in some bushes along the East Coast Greenway bike trail in the area of Dell and Branch streets.

The pooch, named Bailey by the person who found him, was severely emaciated. The Good Samaritan wrapped him in a blanket and took him to the Malden Police Department.

In a news release ARL said that Bailey was initially treated at an animal hospital in Charlestown and later transferred to the ARL.

The agency further said that Bailey weighed just 2.7 pounds and scored 2 out of 9 on the body condition score index. The furbaby also suffered severe fur loss and scabs cover his body.

As if the scenario was not heartbreaking enough, Bailey also tested positive and is being treated for Giardia, a parasitic illness that may indicate he was living in unsanitary conditions.

ARL said: “when presented for medical treatment, the animal was described as ‘malodorous’ (filthy).”

Bailey is receiving ongoing veterinary care, including medicated baths and a refeeding plan to ensure he gains weight slowly and safely”, said the ARL.

I have emailed Mr. Mike DeFina, Communications & Media Relations Officer for the ARL and asked how Bailey is doing and whether vets are optimistic about his full recovery.

Mr. DeFina kindly responded to my email and said: “Bailey is doing remarkably well given what he’s been through. He’s alert, bright and extremely friendly with everyone he meets. It’s too early to tell if his skin issues are chronic or if they’ll resolve over time but he is expected to make a full recovery. He’s a resilient dog who has been through a traumatic experience but the Animal Rescue League of Boston is committed to finding him the home he deserves, as well as determining who may have been responsible for abandoning him.”

So, let’s get to work and find the lowlife who had no problem whatsoever abandoning a tiny living being!

If you have any information about this crime, please speak up for the VOICELESS VICTIM and call the Malden Police Department at (781) - 397 - 7171, or the ARL at (617) - 426 - 9170. Thank you!
