IDA MARIE TURNER arrested for leaving her dog locked in her vehicle for about two hours

- Florida, USA -

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office arrested 56-year-old IDA MARIE TURNER (pictured).

On the afternoon of May 26, 2026, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 1800 block of SW 69th Way in Gainesville after receiving an animal-related call.

Responding deputies found a dog lying on the ground in distress and struggling to breathe.

A spokesperson for the Alachua County Sheriff's Office tells me the dog is a female Pitbull mix named Roxy.

Deputies realized that Roxy was in need of immediate medical care and took her to a local animal hospital where veterinarians determined that Roxy was in critical condition.

Roxy is still hospitalized as she requires continued treatment and monitoring.

As veterinarians began treating Roxy, deputies returned to the suspected residence and together with Alachua County Animal Services gathered information. Deputies then made contact with TURNER, Roxy’s guardian.

From the facts gathered on the scene, deputies ascertained that Roxy had been left locked inside a kennel in the cargo area of TURNER’s vehicle for about two hours. Moreover, it emerged that the vehicle had been parked in front of TURNER’s home in direct sunlight, with the doors and windows closed. The vehicle was turned off, there was no air conditioning running, and there wasn’t any water for Roxy.

According to deputies, when they took the temperature of the dashboard, it registered 171 degrees while the floor board was 101 degrees.

TURNER was arrested and booked into the Alachua County Jail for aggravated animal cruelty causing excessive suffering.

Judge Meshon T. Rawls set bond at $5,000 and ordered TURNER to have no contact with animals.

I also learned from the spokesperson for the Alachua County Sheriff's Office that TURNER surrendered Roxy and once she is released from the hospital, she will be placed in the care of Animal Control.
