Fifty-six dogs rescued from living in deplorable conditions

- Kosciusko County, Indiana, USA -

On Monday, April 6, Silver Lake and Claypool fire departments responded to a gas stove fire at 505 W. Hilltop Lane in Silver Lake.

While crews were there, they discovered 56 Chihuahuas living in deplorable conditions.

Thanks to a search warrant, on Tuesday, April 7, all the furbabies were removed and are now recovering in the care of the nonprofit Kosciusko County Animal Welfare League (AWL).

On April 8, Beth Harrison shared a post with AWL.

She wrote that all the dogs are in fair to poor condition, some are pregnant, and one was in labor at the time of the update.

The poor dogs lacked veterinary care; some of them have nails grown into the pads of their feet and are unable to walk.

All pups have skin conditions, and many of them will need dental work.

As you can imagine taking care of 56 dogs under the circumstances we are experiencing is not an easy job, and AWL needs help from the community.

The shelter desperately needs blankets, towels, dishes, flea and tick medication, small breed pet food, cleaning supplies, pooper scoopers, and monetary donations.

AWL also need of volunteers at this time to assist with the care of the dogs.

Ms. Harrsion wrote in a Facebook post about the items they need:

If you are unable to make it to the shelter, we have an awesome group of people willing to do pick ups. Just send me your address and leave any items you are donating in your driveway or on your steps.

My State Farm office on Detroit Street is also available for drop offs.

If you have messaged myself or the shelter and have not gotten a response, please be patient with us.”

Silver Lake Police are not saying what charges the dogs’ guardian could face.
