Dead wallaby found hanging from tree near picnic area in Tasmania

- Tasmania -

Tasmania police are investigating the death of a wallaby who was found hanging from a tree with a rope around the neck.

Police came across the gruesome picture after someone posted it on their Facebook page on Tuesday, June 16.

The post was then removed.

Before a necropsy was conducted, Tasmania Police Sergeant Craig Harvey said: “We're obviously very concerned, it's a serious act of cruelty. For it to be left in a public place where members of the community see it and could be affected by it, that's very concerning for us. I couldn't say at this stage whether it was alive when it was hung up or if it was already dead.”

On June 18, a press release from Tasmania police said that a necropsy was performed by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment.

Results concluded that the wallaby was deceased before being hung.

Sergeant Craig Harvey said: “While it’s been determined the wallaby was deceased before it was suspended from the tree in the recreational reserve near Saunders Street, the act of suspending the wallaby from the tree does not fit with community expectations.”

RSPCA Tasmania CEO Jan Davis said: “This is a deliberate act of animal cruelty - pure and simple - and there is no excuse for it. We hope that those responsible for such an abhorrent act are found and punished accordingly.”

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward and speak up.

Information can be submitted to Wynyard Police on 6477 7267 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

Thank you!
