CHARANJIT SINGH, postal worker, caught on video hitting peacock, charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty
- California, USA -
On October 8, 2026, Los Angeles County prosecutors charged 48-year-old CHARANJIT SINGH, a U.S. Postal Service worker, with one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.
The charge stems from an incident that occurred on August 18, 2026, in the 3700 block of Mohawk Street in Pasadena, when SINGH allegedly threw a rock at a peacock before striking him with a stick or club. The peacock flapped around before collapsing and was later found lying incapacitated on the ground by neighbors.
A criminal complaint alleges that SINGH “unlawfully, maliciously and intentionally” wounded a living animal.
A camera belonging to resident Gina Davis captured the incident, and NBC Los Angeles published the footage.
The Pasadena Humane Society has provided numerous updates on the case and refers to the peacock as Sugar.
In a Facebook post dated August 24, 2026, the Pasadena Humane Society said:
“After arriving in our care, one of our veterinarians examined him and found areas of swelling and several minor wounds. We also took X-rays, and thankfully, nothing appears to be broken. We’re happy to share that he continues to recover and is doing well. His prognosis is good, and he has been mobile, responsive, and eating and drinking normally. Our team will continue to monitor him closely as he heals.”
After several weeks of dedicated veterinary care at the Pasadena Humane Society, Sugar fully recovered from his injuries. On September 29, 2026, he was relocated to a private ranch in Northern California.
The Pasadena Humane Society explained in a Facebook post:
“After carefully considering what would be best for his long-term wellbeing, our wildlife experts determined that relocation would offer him the best quality of life and help reduce the risk of future negative encounters given the significant public attention surrounding his case.”
The agency also reported that Pasadena Humane Animal Control had completed its investigation and referred the case to the District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration of formal charges.
In a subsequent update, the Pasadena Humane Society shared some happy news about Sugar’s new life:
“He's become more familiar with his new space, he's been enjoying preening in the sun, foraging for bugs, and dipping his feet in his very own kiddie pool. His caretaker reports that he’s even made fast friends with the Pekin ducks who also live on the ranch.”
SINGH, of Rosemead, is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on November 6, 2026.
