KHADIJAH CALDWELL GASKINS, former Newberry Police officer, charged after misusing police records to provide information to co-defendant linked to dogfighting
- South Carolina, USA -
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged 30-year-old KHADIJAH CALDWELL GASKINS (pictured), a former Newberry Police officer, in connection with a dogfighting investigation.
Arrest warrants released with SLED’s press release allege that in May 2023, while serving as a Newberry Police officer, GASKINS improperly accessed the department’s records database and shared the search results with a co-defendant.
According to the warrant, the co-defendant sent GASKINS a news article dated May 17, 2023, about the arrest of men at a dogfight in North Carolina. GASKINS allegedly provided the co-defendant with a picture of the search results from the department’s internal system.
Investigators determined that the co-defendant owned Pitbull-type dogs who were being kept “in a manner consistent with dogfighting.” The warrant further alleges that “digital evidence indicated that GASKINS was aware of her co-defendant's involvement in dogfighting.”
According to another warrant, investigators seized and reviewed a large amount of cellular records data. The records showed Pitbull-type dogs being “consistently kept on the property, some in conditions readily apparent to constitute unnecessary pain and suffering.”
The warrant describes the alleged conditions, including a chained dog covered in blood, dogs with apparent wounds, a dog with shredded oral tissue hanging from his/her mouth, and additional dogs who appeared to be deceased with exposed tissue.
According to the warrant, the kennels were located behind the residence, with no known obstructions blocking the view of the open-front kennels, making the dogs reasonably visible from GASKINS’ residence. Investigators determined that “GASKINS took no action to help the suffering of the animals.”
On Monday, October 5, 2026, GASKINS was charged with misconduct in office, ill treatment of animals, and criminal conspiracy. She was booked into the Newberry County Detention Center, according to SLED’s press release.
The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
