The Boynton Beach Police Department announced that on October 26, 2023, 25-years-old ALEXANDRA ROSALY ABREU and 28-years-old CHRISTOPHER JAMAL MILLER (both pictured) pled guilty to animal cruelty charges.
A very generous sentence was handed down to these two evil individuals despite their cruel and despicable actions. But first, let’s see what they did.
According to the arrest reports obtained by Voice For Us, on the morning of October 28, 2021, BBPD Animal Cruelty Investigator Liz Roerich responded to a property on 512 Northwest 9th Avenue, Boynton Beach, in reference to a citizen complaint of possible dog neglect.
The caller reported that over the past two weeks, she had seen a large white dog, who was wearing a cone, confined inside a crate underneath the carport. She then added that one of the dog’s legs was bandaged and that the furbaby often whined and cried in pain.
The caller went on to say that she saw the dog’s guardian “hosing out the cage with the dog in it.” Additionally, the caller reported seeing numerous dogs coming and going from the property.
According to the reports, the caller left a message on the voice mail of Investigator Roerich’s office and while she was crying throughout the message, she pled with the authorities to check on the welfare of the Voiceless Victim.
Upon arrival, Investigator Roerich saw two wire dog crates near a trash can next to the curb and four wire crates underneath the carport.
“The bottoms of the empty crates were laden with dog feces intermingled with dry dog kibble. Numerous flies swarmed the area and an overwhelming putrid stench of feces and urine permeated the air”, stated the reports.
Investigator Roerich reported that inside the largest of the four crates, she saw fresh dog feces, empty metal bowls, a soiled blanket, and a long-soiled piece of medical gauze.
When she knocked on the front door and windows, no one answered. According to Investigator Roerich, she did not hear or see any dogs. As she walked back toward her truck, she saw a large white dog in a neighboring front yard.
She reported the dog was extremely thin, had a soiled Elizabethan collar (cone), appeared scared, and had her tail tucked between her legs.
Investigator Roerich noticed that the lower part of the dog's right foreleg was missing and a large section of her leg bone was protruding from the end of her limb.
Investigator Roerich gently approached the dog and slipped a leash around her neck. She then petted the furbaby who began wagging her tail and “became extremely affectionate.”
After removing the cone, Investigator Roerich gave the furbaby fresh water and food, and then took her to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control for medical treatment and safe-keeping.
The dog was described as a 1-year-old Dogo Argentino named Snow.
Meanwhile, Investigator Roerich identified ABREU as the tenant of the residence, called her in the evening, and sked her if she knew the whereabouts of her dog Snow. ABREU responded: “right now she’s inside, she’s in my house, in her cage.” Investigator Roerich went on to ask ABREU if Snow had an injured leg, and ABREU had the audacity to answer: “there's nothing wrong with her, I’ve been treating her, she’s completely fine.”
During the phone conversation, ABREU said that she resided with her boyfriend whom she falsely identified as Chris Thomas. According to the reports, ABREU explained that she and her boyfriend had “2 or 3” dogs who were being housed at a veterinarian's office due to a recent “parvo outbreak” at her home.
Two days later, on October 30, 2021, ABREU met with Investigator Roerich at the police station to discuss the incident and prior to her interview, she was read her Miranda rights.
ABREU stated she was unemployed and that she was attending college online studying pre-med with the intent of becoming a doctor.
ABREU said she and her boyfriend had seventeen (17) dogs of various breeds, including Snow. ABREU stated they breed the dogs and sell the puppies and admitted that neither she nor her boyfriend had a Hobby Breeder permit. Furthermore, ABREU admitted that when they sell the puppies, they do not provide veterinary health certificates.
During the interview ABREU stated that she recently had an outbreak of the parvo virus at her home that killed an unknown number of puppies. So, she took all of her and her boyfriend's dog/puppies, with the exception of Snow to Best Vet Animal Hospital for treatment and safe-keeping while she was in the process of cleaning and disinfecting her home and the dogs’ cages.
According to Boca Post, ABREU said that the following, are the dogs and puppies she took to the animal hospital:
· Cash, American Bully, 3 years old
· Diamond, American Bully, 1 Year old
· Toyoko, American Bully, 3 Years old
· Four unnamed American Bully puppies, 9 weeks old
· Cali, French Bulldog, 2 years old
· Sunshine, Shih Tzu, 9 months old
· Luna, Havanese, 4 years old
· Oreo, Havanese, 9 months old
· Kilo, Havanese, 1 year old
· Star, Havanese, 1 year old
· Shark, Shih Tzu-Poodle Mix, 6 months old
· Cream, Maltipoo, 9 weeks old
· Sugar, Maltipoo, 9 weeks old
According to the reports, after a lengthy discussion, ABREU agreed to relinquish custody of Snow, but when she was given an opportunity to relinquish custody of the sixteen dogs/puppies she adamantly refused to do so.
With regard to Snow, ABREU said that she and her boyfriend “acquired” her approximately four months prior from a breeder in north Florida.
ABREU stated that at some point Snow developed an unknown medical condition on her paws so her boyfriend took her to another breeder for medical advice.
According to ABREU, her boyfriend self-treated Snow’s paws and did not seek professional veterinary care. ABREU went on to say that two weeks ago, she woke up one morning and Snow’s right forepaw “was gone.”
ABREU claimed she treated Snow with penicillin she had left over from another dog’s c-section surgery and placed a bandage over her leg. She believed Snow had greatly improved.
ABREU was aware that Snow’s bone was protruding from her leg and admitted she chose not to seek veterinary treatment.
After the interview with ABREU, Investigator Roerich received a phone call from MILLER who “claimed ownership of all of the dogs including Snow” stated the reports.
MILLER admitted he was aware that Snow had a leg injury and stated he had sought medical advise from an out-of-town breeder.
MILLER told Investigator Roerich that all of his dogs were his “emotional support animals” and Snow was his “primary emotional support dog.”
MILLER stated that he and ABREU took “excellent care of their animals” and routinely took them to many veterinarians. However, when Investigator Roerich asked him for the names of the veterinarians, he replied: “I don’t really know”.
As stated in the reports, MILLER was given multiple opportunities to relinquish custody of Snow and the other sixteen dogs and puppies but refused until November 6, 2021, when he finally relinquished his “ownership rights” to Snow.
On November 23, 2021, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control staff veterinarian Dr. Sara Chapman, DVM, provided a written report detailing Snow’s health and physical condition.
Dr. Chapman noted Snow’s right front limb was missing and a long bone was exposed from the end of the limb. Dr. Chapman also noted the limb was “caked with dried discharge” and there was moist discharge oozing from where the bone was exposed.
Dr. Chapman estimated the initial injury occurred “weeks to months” prior to October 28, 2021, and it “would have been extremely painful when it occurred and throughout the duration of healing”.
Moreover, Snow was underweight with “ribs, lumbar vertebrae and hips becoming prominent” and diagnostic tests revealed she was positive for hookworms.
Let’s forward to October 26, 2023, when the court issued a sentence.
Police said that ABREU and MILLER received a 15-day jail sentence followed by a three-year probation period.
ABREU and MILLER were also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service, they are required to cover all associated court costs, and as part of the plea agreement, they will be required to submit their DNA.
Police also said that ABREU and MILLER “are prohibited from owning any pets, with the exception of two Emotional Support Animals (ESA). These two animals must be sterilized within 30 days of the plea agreement.”
Animal Care and Control will conduct random house checks to ensure compliance with the pet ownership restrictions.
ABREU and MILLER were ordered to make a meager donation of $500 donation to Animal Care and Control.
Additionally, ABREU and MILLER are required to complete the “BARC” (Benchmark Animal Rehabilitative Curriculum) course.
Investigator Roerich said in statement: “This case was one of the most egregious acts of neglect and cruelty I have ever witnessed. The defendants' callous actions were heartless and beyond inhumane.”
Well, clearly, the judge thought that all the suffering endured by the furvictims was just a joke and a laughing matter that did not require any severe punishment!
