The Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office announced that on Friday, January 12, 2024, in Cherokee County Superior Court, 59 RANDALL LARRY THAXTON (pictured) was sentenced after being found guilty of running a dogfighting operation out of his Canton home.

On December 8, 2023, after about three hours of jury deliberation, THAXTON was found guilty of nine counts of dogfighting and seven counts of cruelty to animals.

Superior Court Judge Tony Baker sentenced THAXTON to twenty (20) years in prison, with the first five years to be served behind bars.

THAXTON was ordered to pay $45,000 in fines and to serve 360 hours of mandatory community service. Additionally, according to the DA’s Office, THAXTON is forbidden from “owning”, “possessing”, or breeding dogs and may not have contact with any known dogfighters or people who attend dogfights.

It all started in November 2022, when Cherokee and Paulding County authorities received a tip about possible dogfighting activity.

The Cherokee County Marshals conducted a welfare check at a home on Union Hill Road in Canton and reported “signs that Thaxton was possibly involved in dog fighting.”

According to the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, “Officers noticed that eight of his dogs were tethered outside with heavy logging chains commonly used by dog fighters. The dogs were chained close to each other but just out of reach, a tactic that serves to build dog aggression. These signs of dog fighting, along with additional investigation, led to the Marshal’s Office following up with a search warrant.”

A search warrant executed at the home on December 6, 2022, led to the discovery of items associated with dog fighting. Authorities found steroids, a break stick, medical supplies for treating wounds, a journal with animal workout regimens, documents linking dogs to other dog fighters, contracts for dog sales, and a dog fighting creed.

The DA’s Office said that the veterinarian who examined the Voiceless Victims “found that they had skin infections, rashes around their necks from their collars, and swollen paw pads.”

THAXTON was placed under arrest and all the furvictims were taken to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter where a pregnant dog gave birth to puppies soon afterward.

Animal Crimes Resource Prosecutor Jessica Rock said in a statement: “Dog fighters operate hidden in plain sight, in an organized, criminal enterprise that includes breeding and selling dogs, training dogs, hosting and spectating violent fights, and fighting dogs to the point of exhaustion or serious injury. It is a despicable activity that is incredibly cruel to the dogs. By prosecuting dog fighters, we bring this underground world to light, ensure that these dogs receive the justice they deserve, and work toward someday completely eradicating this crime.”

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Murphy said evidence suggested THAXTON may have been involved in dogfighting for decades.

Cherokee County District Attorney Susan Treadaway stated: “Let this be a clear message that Cherokee County will not accept or condone inhumane treatment of animals – especially the violence and abuse associated with dog fighting. It is time as a society that we step up and stop the abuse and mistreatment of innocent animals. Ordinary citizens can play a part in stopping the abuse of animals by recognizing signs of dog fighting and reporting concerns to law enforcement.”

On the morning of Sunday 7, 2024, officers with the Banning Police Department responded to the 700 block of W. Gilman Street, in the City of Banning, after receiving a report that a dog had been stabbed.

According to the Department’s press release obtained by Voice For Us, the suspect who stabbed the dog fled the scene prior to the officer’s arrival.

Police identified the suspect as 34-years-old NATASHA AMBER SERRANO.

Witnesses told police that SERRANO stabbed the family dog and then fled the scene in her vehicle.

The dog was immediately taken to a local veterinary hospital for medical treatment.

I emailed the Banning Police Department to inquire about the Voiceless Victim and I was told that the dog is a female English Bulldog named Bubbles. I was further told that Bubbles is “recovering at a local Animal Hospital in the region and that Bubbles was being well cared for and was doing well.

Police then issued a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) on SERRANO for felony animal cruelty charges, to local law enforcement agencies.

Less than two hours later, Banning Police Dispatch was contacted by Ontario Police

Department, advising they had SERRANO detained. Banning Police responded and took custody of her.

SERRANO was later booked into Larry Smith Correctional Facility for felony animal cruelty charges.

Police tell me this case is still under investigation and they are unable to provide very much information at this time.

The Department is asking anyone who may have additional information regarding this incident to call (951) - 922 - 3170. Thank you!

Following a gut-wrenching video that was widely circulated on social media, showing 26-years-old MATTHEW JACOB FIALA (pictured), abusing a defenseless dog, FIALA is now facing animal cruelty charges.

The incident, that was thankfully recorded by a neighbor, happened on January 2, 2024, at FIALA’s home.

The video starts with FIALA taking a picture of a German Shepherd on a leash. FIALA then can be seen pulling the dog to a crate and the dog can be seen resisting. Once the Voiceless Victim is inside the crate, FIALA looks around and then throws a bucket of water in the dog’s face. But that’s not all.  As the German Shepherd attempts to escape, FIALA flips and tips the crate with the dog inside. FIALA then opens the crate door and when the furbaby tries to escape, FIALA proceeds to kick the crate door right near the dog’s face. FIALA can also be seen slamming the crate against the concrete.

Throughout the video, the German Shepherd can be heard yelping and crying.

The Pleasant Hill Police Department received a copy of the video on January 2, 2024, and officers responded to FIALA’s home.

FIALA claims to be a dog trainer and appears to operate under several different names.

According to 41 KSHB, Pleasant Hill Police Chief Thomas Wright told the news outlet: “We think it’s a client’s dog” and added: “The dog could still be at Fiala’s house. We could not seize the dog. He didn’t let us in his house.”

41 KSHB reports that FIALA told police there are a total of six dogs in his house, and police believe three of them are his.

Police Chief Wright told KCTV: “We know that the neighbors have reported abuse in the past, but it’s always been anonymous. The difference in this case is that somebody has decided, ‘Hey, it’s time to stand up for these animals.’ And so that and with that video that gives us evidence that we need to put a case together.”

On Monday, January 8, 2024, city prosecutors charged FIALA with animal cruelty, having too many animals in his home, and not having a business license.

Court records show that FIALA is scheduled to appear at Pleasant Hill Municipal Court on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. before Judge Roger Andre Potter.

Chief Wright said this is an ongoing investigation and his department is working with the Cass County Prosecuting Attorney for possible state charges.
