A recent animal cruelty bust in Panola County raises a serious discussion. Where will the dogs removed from a residence on 3572 Mount Olivet Road in Batesville be placed? The county does not have an animal shelter!

FOX13′s reporter Tom Dees talked to Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps who said he hopes county leaders have a solution soon.

Sheriff Phelps said that on Friday, December 2, 2022, six Pitbulls were found chained, starving, and without food or water on the property of 48-years-old CHARLES DANIEL BEARD. Sadly, officials also discovered a deceased dog in a doghouse.

Reportedly, BEARD told officers he had not fed and watered the dogs only for a few days, but the pictures tell otherwise!

Sheriff Phelps had to ask the city of Batesville for room at their shelter. He told FOX13: “We are at the point in the county where we will have to have an animal shelter or dog pound or something.” “We cannot pick these dogs up and carry them to a facility. The humane society, they have done so much for this county. They are full. They can’t do it anymore. They have dogs that they are picking up and have to keep at their house trying to get them adopted. They are out of the room,” he added.

As Sheriff Phelps explained to FOX13, the county has gotten more than 500 animal-related calls this year and he wants to hire a full-time animal control officer. An old 900 square foot airplane hangar is disassembled and stored behind the jail, and Sheriff Phelps said it could be used as an animal shelter if the county would commit to purchasing individual pens.

According to Sheriff Phelps, people in the community have offered donations to pay for a shelter. He also said that so far, the response from county supervisors has been positive.

They know it’s time to do something. They know it is not a quick fix, but they are hopefully willing to get some pens installed so they are on board,” he said.

BEARD was charged with seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor on first offense. Online records show he is out on bond.

In Defense of Animals, the international animal protection organization operating Hope Animal Sanctuary and Justice for Animals Campaign in Mississippi, announced that on November 18, 2022, Crystal Springs Municipal Judge Jeff Varas bound over DANIEL BERTHELETTE (pictured), to a grand jury to face animal cruelty charges for dragging his neighbor’s dog to death.

As the organization explained in a news release, BERTHELETTE was arrested by the Crystal Springs Police Department (CSPD) on September 14, 2022, “for wrapping a wire around his neighbor’s dog’s neck, George, attaching it to his truck, and dragging George to death.”

In Defense of Animals reports that witness Chris Wright testified that he saw BERTHELETTE driving in front of him, pulling a trailer and that he could see something from the back of the trailer. Mr. Wright said they appeared to be ears so he drove up further. BERTHELETTE had stopped and was trying to unravel the bailing wire around George. According to Mr. Wright, George looked at him and moaned. BERTHELETTE couldn’t get the wire loose, and when Mr. Wright asked him what he was doing, BERTHLETTE did not answer. Although Mr. Wright took something from his truck to cut George loose, BERTHELETTE got back in his truck, said: “I hate that fucking dog,” and drove off.

BERTHELETTE tried to dispose of George’s body in a city dumpster, but city employees stopped him. These employees later identified BERTHELETTE to law enforcement.

Crystal Springs Mayor Sally Garland personally launched an investigation with Public Works Director Russell Brewer to successfully identify BERTHELETTE.

Ms. Doll Stanley, In Defense of Animals’ Justice for Animals Senior Campaigner, attended court in support of justice and George’s guardians, the Bush family.

Mayor Garland was delighted that Ms. Stanley was in court and said: “We are a small city, we want word to get out and make the perpetrator famous. We are thankful In Defense of Animals is involved because we just don’t have that kind of network or resources. I have heard of Doll Stanley and I knew that In Defense of Animals does very good work. We need justice, so when I saw her there, I felt relieved because I knew something’s going to be done. We are mortified and our hearts are broken over the very idea that someone could tie a wire around a dog’s neck and drag him. No one should think that they can ever drag a dog and get away with it.”

In Defense of Animals said they will follow this case with the Bush family as they mourn the loss of their furbaby and recover from it.

On the morning of Tuesday, October 4, 2022, an officer with the Madison Police Department Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 55 southbound near the 108-mile marker in the City of Madison.

Madison police said in a news release that during this stop, the officer became suspicious of criminal activity and during a probable cause search of the vehicle, the officer recovered marijuana along with eleven dogs.

Police said the dogs were inside multiple cages, were malnourished, and one of them had injuries consistent with dogfighting.

The officer then called in an investigator with animal control who removed all eleven dogs and took them to a local veterinarian for emergency care and treatment.

Police arrested the driver of the van, 56-years-old EDWARD THEODORE BRONAUGH (pictured), of Indianapolis, Indiana. BRONAUGH was charged with transporting dogs for the purpose of dogfighting, animal cruelty, and possession of controlled substance.

BRONAUGH is being held at the Madison County Detention Center awaiting his initial appearance in the City of Madison Municipal Court.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and District Attorney John “Bubba” Bramlett was contacted. The case will be forwarded to his office for prosecution and potential forfeiture proceedings based upon the animal cruelty and transportation charges.

As I always say whenever I publish a dogfighting related story, I have nothing but hatred for those filthy individuals who make blood money at the expense of innocent animals!

If you like fights, just throw your friends and family into a ring and watch them injure each other!

Only a sick individual can watch animals fight. Just get an honest job!!!
