On the afternoon of December 21, 2023, police from the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway responded to a request for medical aid at an apartment on Seagirt Boulevard.

Officers found a black and white, mixed-breed female dog named Puddin in a corner.

According to a press release by the Queens County District Attorney’s Office, “Puddin was tied to a box-like structure with a chain of approximately six inches, making it impossible for her to move freely.”

A collar-shaped metal device was fastened around Puddin’s neck and face, secured by a padlock.

There was no food or water near Puddin, nor dog food in the apartment. “Puddin was emaciated, her spine, ribs and hipbones protruding”, stated the release. Puddin’s coat was damp with urine, patchy, and covered in dirt and dander.

Officers used bolt cutters to remove the padlocked collar and once Puddin was finally free to move, “she immediately ran to the bathroom and drank water from the toilet”, said District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Officers then noticed a thickened scar with scabbing across the top of Puddin’s muzzle.

Puddin’s guardian, 41-years-old EVADNE HARRINGTON, gave officers permission to take the Voiceless Victim in for veterinary treatment and relinquished ownership of Puddin to the ASPCA.

When Puddin arrived at the non-profit’s Animal Recovery Center, she was emaciated and dehydrated. Pudding required intensive treatment for a slew of medical conditions, including widespread skin infections, hair loss, and various injuries.

The good news is that after Puddin’s condition improved, she was placed with a foster family and is now available for adoption.

On March 25, 2024, HARRINGTON was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on charges of overdriving; torturing, and injuring animals/failure to provide sustenance; and failure to provide proper food and drink to an impounded animal.

If convicted, HARRINGTON faces up to ONLY a year in jail, a joke!!!!

Queens Criminal Court Judge Jeffrey Gershuny ordered her to return to court on July 1, 202, at 9:00 a.m.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement: “The abuse of voiceless, defenseless creatures is unconscionable. Puddin thankfully was rescued from her miserable circumstances. We look forward to holding her abuser accountable.”

The Gainesville Police Department arrested 30-years-old DESTINY MERCEDES BENTON (pictured).

On December 12, 2023, BENTON took her dog named Lotto to Banfield Pet Hospital.

Lotto had several medical conditions, but according to the affidavit obtained by Voice For Us, the most severe was “severe necrotic skin disease.”

The veterinarian offered several treatment options to BENTON but she refused and said that she could afford to pay for the medical care. The vet also discussed surrendering Lotto to someone else but at the time there was no placement for the dog. Finally, the vet “offered a free euthanasia” but BENTON declined and left with Lotto.

Three days later, on December 15, 2023, a passerby found Lotto abandoned on the side of the road with a dog bed at SW 122nd Street and SW 89th Avenue (approximately ten miles from BENTON's apartment).

The Good Samaritan then took Lotto to the UF Small Animal Hospital and dropped him/her off “as stray”, stated the affidavit.

Lotto had “extensive wounds on the head and neck” and was covered "in dirt and purulent material" with chunks of skin falling off that were removed during bathing.

Alachua County Animal Resources were alerted and an officer responded to take possession of Lotto. The responding officer learned from the veterinarian that the injuries sustained by Lotto “were from a chemical burn.” The affidavit further stated “There was dead and infected tissue that had to be removed. Without intervention the dog would have died from infection.”

The officer also took pictures of Lotto to be sent out in hopes of finding his/her guardian.

Staff at Banfield Pet Hospital then contacted the Alachua County Animal Resources Officer and revealed that BENTON was Lotto's guardian and provided the officer with additional information.

At that point, the officer was able to make contact with BENTON at her apartment.

Post Miranda BENTON said she took the dog to the vet and they could not determine what caused the injuries but said it could have been from a Brown Recluse spider bite. BENTON went on to state that she could not pay for the medical treatment and that staff wanted her to turn Lotto over to them. BENTON confirmed that she did not get any medication from the hospital.

BENTON then told the officer that Lotto had run away and she did not know where he/she was.

Court documents show that a sworn complaint was filed on December 23, 2023, and a warrant for BENTON’s arrest was issued on March 14, 2024, by Judge David Kreider with a recommended bond of $10,000.

BENTON was arrested on April 17, 2024, and charged with one felony count of animal cruelty. She was released on her own recognizance on the condition that she may not possess any animals.

I have emailed Alachua County Animal Resources to inquire about Lotto. If I get a response, I will post an update.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested 27-years-old ROGELIO DIAZ (pictured).

According to the Department’s media release, on the afternoon of Friday, April 5, 2024, DIAZ was walking near the 4900 block of Marine Avenue in Lawndale when he saw a cat on the driveway of a home and grabbed the furbaby. DIAZ then repeatedly struck the cat until she was dead.

CBS News identified the cat as a female named Mimi.

The murderer was located and taken into custody on April 11, 2024. He was charged with torturing/killing a live animal. CBS News reports that when DIAZ was arrested, he had cat food on him.

As stated in the media release, “Based on the nature of the offense and additional evidence, detectives believe there may be additional victims.”

In fact, according to an article published by CBS News on April 16, 2024, investigators believe that on April 3, 2024, DIAZ also killed a 16-year-old Chihuahua named Chiquita.

CBS News reports that surveillance footage shows the moments that DIAZ “brutally kicks the dog name Chiquita into the street outside of her owner's home.”

He then stops riding his bike, puts on gloves and moves the dog onto the sidewalk where he repeatedly ran her over.”

I have emailed the Los Angeles County DA’s Office to inquire about DIAZ’s arraignment that was scheduled for April 15, 2024. If I get a response, I will post an update.

Anyone with information about DIAZ or this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at (323) - 820 - 6700 or (323) - 820 - 6761. Thank you!

The investigation into DIAZ is ongoing.
