~ Update: September 27, 2023

On Monday, September 25, 2023, 59-years-old MICHAEL A. JOHNSON SR. and his wife, 58-years-old CAROLYN W. JOHNSON (both pictured), appeared in Hampton General District Court on animal cruelty charges that were filed against them in July 2023.

In July, the Hampton Police Department arrested MICHAEL A. JOHNSON SR. and charged him with animal cruelty and dogfighting after four adult Pitbulls and four Pitbull puppies were found living in poor health and unsafe conditions at the couple’s home on Ireland Street.

Detectives also recovered evidence suggesting that the dogs were being conditioned for fights.

Shortly after the arrest, police announced that the defendant’s wife, CAROLYN W. JOHNSON, had also been charged in connection with the case, with eight counts of Failure to Provide Duties of Ownership and eight counts of Animal Cruelty.

At the time, she was a Lieutenant with the Hampton Sheriff's Office. After she was charged, she was placed on administrative leave and then retired.

13NewsNow reports that on Monday, all the charges were pushed back.

Representatives of the Virginia Attorney General's Office handling the case announced they will not prosecute the couple on these charges at this time. Attorneys could bring the charges back to court at a later time pending new evidence”, reports 13NewsNow.

All the misdemeanor charges filed against CAROLYN W. JOHNSON were nolle prossed, a Latin phrase meaning “to be unwilling to prosecute.”

All the charges filed against her husband, two of which are felonies, were also nolle prossed.

Pending new evidence in their investigation, attorneys still have the chance to bring the charges back to court.

I emailed Victoria LaCivita, spokeswoman for the Virginia Attorney General's Office and asked her: “In addition to the poor conditions the dogs and puppies were found in, would you please disclose what new evidence is required to bring back the charges and prosecute the defendants?” To that, Ms. LaCivita responded: “Despite the hearing, the investigation remains ongoing and I cannot comment on pending litigation.”

I am not just angry and disappointed; I am also extremely confused as to how the investigations were conducted and what importance was given to the evidence recovered from the couple’s residence. Once again, we have Voiceless Victims without justice!

~ Update: July 27, 2023

According to a press release by the Hampton Police Department, 58-years-old CAROLYN JOHNSON has also been charged in connection with this case. She is facing eight (8) counts of Failure to Provide Duties of Ownership and eight (8) counts of Animal Cruelty.

~ Original story:

Following a complaint submitted to the Hampton Animal Response Team (HART) on July 25, 2023, the Hampton Police Division arrested 59-years-old MICHAEL A. JOHNSON SR., accused of dogfighting.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that JOHNSON is married to Lieutenant Carolyn Johnson of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office.

HART officers responded to a home on Ireland Street near Phoebus High School but JOHNSON did not allow them to perform a welfare check on his dogs so a search warrant was obtained and executed.

Officials found eight dogs, four adult Pitbulls and four Pitbull puppies, living in poor health and unsafe conditions.

WAVY reports that according to court documents, “The dogs had rough and raw skin and were covered in fleas. The animals ears’ were bleeding because of fly bites.”

The Voiceless Victims were being kept in kennels covered with feces.

Inside a shed, officers found evidence consistent with preparing dogs for fighting and inside the home they found “documents and items associated with breeding and conditioning a dog”, reports WAVY.

Police said that JOHNSON has been charged with eight (8) counts of Animal Cruelty, eight (8) counts of Failure to Provide Duties of Ownership, and four (4) counts of Dogfighting.

JOHNSON was released on a meager $5,000 bond. A condition set by a judge is that no animals are to be in the residence until the court authorizes otherwise.

Court records show that JOHNSON is scheduled to appear at Hampton General District Court on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at 8:30 a.m.

The Hampton Animal Response Team removed all eight furvictims and took them to the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter. Needless to say, I have emailed PRAS to inquire about the furbabies’ well being and if I hear back, I will post an update.

The investigation is ongoing.

JOHNSON, get a job instead of using innocent dogs to make a living!

- Delaware, USA -

On Sunday, January 8, 2023, a noise complaint to the Delaware State Police (DSP) led officials to an illegal dogfighting operation.

Law enforcement officials responded to a report of suspicious activity at a home in the 2600 block of Lonesome Road, Seaford in Sussex County and upon arrival they found multiple individuals actively engaged in a dogfighting event.

Police were later joined by the Delaware Division of Public Health’s Office of Animal Welfare division (OAW) and following a search and seizure warrant, OAW removed fourteen dogs found at the residence.

According to OAW, one of the fourteen dogs removed from the property, sadly died from the injuries sustained from the dogfighting activities.

The other thirteen dogs were placed in the care of the nonprofit Brandywine Valley SPCA, and the organization explained in a Facebook post that five of them are in “serious condition.”

The Brandywine Valley SPCA also said: “We're giving the 13 dogs rescued from alleged dog fighting activity in Seaford, Delaware likely the first love and compassion they have ever experienced. They are also showing us their resilience after all they have endured.”

Police arrested:

35-years-old BYRON L. BRIDDELL, of Berlin, Maryland (pictured)

36-years-old GLENN WHITE, of Salisbury, Maryland (pictured)

44-years-old SAMUEL W. FOREMAN, of Whaleyville, Maryland (pictured)

44-years-old TIMOTHY WHALEY, of Salisbury, Maryland (pictured)

46-years-old KEVIN C. LAND, of Seaford, Delaware (pictured)

They were all charged with animal fighting, being present during an animal fight, cruelty to animals, and resisting arrest. They have since posted bail!

As the investigation into this case continued, a sixth individual has been arrested and four dogs have been removed from his home.

The Division of Public Health said in a news release that the sixth arrestee, 45-years-old RONNELL D. JACOBS (pictured), of Laurel, was identified as the person who fled the scene where the other five individuals were arrested.

JACOBS is charged with three felony counts related to dogfighting, and two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

As indicated in the press release: “Ronnell Jacobs is currently being held without bail for a Violation of Probation related to his January 12 arrest on dog fighting and animal cruelty charges, but not as a result of the charges themselves, for which he was released on his own recognizance. He remains incarcerated at Sussex Correctional Institution. He is ordered to have no contact, possession, or ownership of any animals pending the outcome of the case.”

JACOBS was arraigned on January 12, 2023, on the following charges:

Two counts owning, possessing, keeping or using an animal for the purpose of fighting.

One count being present at an animal fight.

Two counts of cruelty or neglect to animals.

JACOBS “was found to be under the supervision of the Department of Corrections’ Probation and Parole Office and wearing an ankle monitor,” stated the release. A review of JACOBS’ location on the date and time of the dogfighting bust, placed him at the Lonesome Road property.

On January 12, OAW obtained a search and seizure warrant for JACOBS’ residence, where officials found and removed four dogs were seized. Two of the VOICELESS VICTIMS were found chained in the woods behind the home and had injuries consistent with dog fighting.

These dogs were also placed in the care of the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

OAW said that upon seizure, two of the four dogs required emergency veterinary care and one of the two who required emergency veterinary care was determined to be unable to recover from his/her wounds and was sadly euthanized.

To date, as a result of the investigation, eighteen INNOCENT dogs were rescued, three of them have died, and two others have been adopted. The remaining dogs continue to recover.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this case should contact OAW at (302) - 255 - 4646. Thank you!

Please, visit the Brandywine Valley SPCA Facebook page to see how you can help them face this hardship. Thank you!

- Louisiana, USA -

On Thursday, November 17, 2022, Judge Shelly D. Dick of the Central Louisiana District Court sentenced 35-years-old AQUINTAS KANTRELL SINGLETON (pictured, via Facebook), of Baton Rouge, to only twelve months and one day in prison “for possessing dogs for the purpose of using them in an animal fighting venture,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

SINGLETON appeared before judge Dick on July 12, 2022, when he pleaded guilty to an Animal Welfare Act crime involving the possession of seventeen dogs for use in an animal fighting venture.

As indicated in a press release by the U.S. Department of Justice, court documents show that law enforcement agents became aware of SINGLETON’s involvement in an interstate dogfighting ring in 2017.

Court-authorized wiretaps document that beginning in the summer of 2017, SINGLETON “had various telephone conversations with other dogfighters to discuss the results of fights held in Louisiana and Georgia. They also discussed upcoming matches and the stakes they would wager in those dogfights.”

According to the news release, the details of these conversations included strategies and plans for how to breed, market, house, train and prepare dogs for dogfights. These calls and other information acquired, led law enforcement agents to expand their investigation.

On October 24, 2017, officials searched SINGLETON’s property and discovered seventeen Pitbull-type dogs.

As stated in the release, the dogs “were kept separated from one another and restrained with heavy chains and weighted dog collars, or kept in rudimentary cages. Many of the dogs exhibited scars or fresh wounds consistent with dogfighting. Agents found a file box containing breed information, breeding papers, breed magazines, and dog registration papers.”

Additionally, officials found Dexamethasone (a diuretic used to achieve proper weight in preparation for the dogfights) and other dogfighting paraphernalia.

Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Williams Jr. of the FBI New Orleans Field Office said: “Animal cruelty is a heinous crime that deserves our ultimate condemnation and serious legal consequences for those who engage in it for ‘sport’ and/or profit. Today’s sentencing should serve as a reminder to those like Mr. Aquintas Singleton who commit such crimes, that they will be held accountable.”

I said it before and I will say it again. Individuals like AQUINTAS KANTRELL SINGLETON, who make easy, bloody, dishonest money at the expense of innocent animals, are society’s vomit.

The hypocrisy of subjects like SINGLETON who demand respect for their life is shocking!

SINGLETON, you took innocent, defenseless, helpless dogs and put them against each other against their own will just so that you could make some bucks because you are too ignorant to get a proper and respectful employment!

Last, but most definitely not least, any judge who hands down a sentence as ridiculous as the one you have received is no better than you!
